The TRD and Magnuson branded superchargers are CARB certified so yes. Magnuson finally got their certification a couple years ago. I've passed smog twice now with my supercharger on.

More importantly you MUST have the CARB sticker under the hood that matches the serial number of the supercharger you have installed. If you buy a used one you better make sure it comes with that sticker. Without it you will fail smog.

Can you buy the carb sticker? And where’s the serial number on the SC?

To be honest I haven't looked for the serial number on mine...I might be wrong about that but there is an official number on the CARB sticker that the smog techs run through their system to make sure its legit. I don't think you can buy just the sticker but maybe...would have to call Magnuson about that.

Just trying to emphasize that the smog techs are going to look for that sticker when they do the visual inspection and without it they will fail you

There's no such thing as matching trd supercharger serial # to carb eo#. There's 2 different carb eo#, 1 for the older grey unit (I believe) and the newer carb eo# (black 2nd gen) which superceded both. As of last year 2018, Toyota still sell the superceded trd carb eo# sticker for like $10 buck.

Makes sense, I had a feeling I might be incorrect about the serial number part after I posted it. My main point was just that you have to have a CARB sticker and the number on it has to be legitimate, otherwise you'll fail the visual inspection.

My first time getting smogged with my truck, I almost failed because apparently the number on the CARB sticker for my TRD headers was matched to a 2003 Tacoma and not a 2004 Tacoma like what I have. He ended up passing me though because he knew there was no real difference between an 03 and an 04. But that's how strict they can be

Good to know you can still buy the stickers through Toyota, I wasn't aware of that

You are not required to have the sticker under the hood as long as you can provide a paper copy of carb eo # from carb site.

This is what I've experienced so far, as OEM as the blower looks they still notice it and look for that CARB sticker.

Good to know, cause that CARB sticker gets older and nastier by the year, there will be a time or instance where I will need to rely on some other verification method.

I have the relatively rare 2RZ/3RZ Alpine Supercharger made by a small South African company. Finding the CARB decal was basically impossible so I made my own in Adobe Illustrator. I had them printed by a decal maker.

This decal doesn’t exist. I made it myself.

Is your friend thinking about getting a used TRD S/C or buying a new Magnuson S/C? If they go new, Magnuson will issue them a legit EO# sticker. Contact their tech support for the details.

@BartMaster1234 I had no idea a supercharge was available for the 4cyl. Do you know if the one you have is compatible with the 2.4?

The supercharger is identical for the 2RZ and 3RZ, as the engines are almost identical as well. The 3RZ is simply a bored version of the 2RZ.

What difference does it make if you add miles to your truck?
It’s not going to make that much of a difference value wise and these trucks aren’t afraid of miles

@1997tacomav6 Very Fair argument. There is more variables in play and I was too lazy to type them all out. Fuel economy, my truck topper limits some truck functions, and big Tires aren't cheap to name a few. Also this is the reasons I tell my wife so I can get the 2.4. LOL
