I have hit my share. AVIS started stamping my rental agreements “not responsible for roo damage”, and the embassy told me to try avoiding them.

I maintained a very low profile. The only people I really had any contact with were Ag attache and the amin officer in Sydney. I think it was just a note of concern because they covered the damages under our agreement. AVIS just had cars and I would pick them up and drop them off everywhere at outback airports. I would fly out of Sydney on Monday am, pick up a car say in Orange drive around inspecting slaughterhouses and leave it in say Tennant Creek flying back to Sydney on Friday. I don’t know and never really cared. The goal was to not hit them front on to avoid radiator damage in the middle of nowhere. Most of outback roads were dirt then 1971 to 82. Road trains were a problem in NT and northern WA, they would through up dirt and stones and break windshields. AVIS covered those.
