Check for exhaust gasses in the coolant. The water pump does not create pressure and it is technically three pieces, pulley...shaft...pump vanes. But I've never heard it this metal style one breaking in anyway other than bearing failure and leaking.

 

It has to be either a defective thermostat even tho I put two new ones in in two days or the water pump.


The top radiator hose is at 190 degrees and the bottom hose is at 30 degrees, so there is definitely no
water movement through the radiator after driving it for 10 miles.

Anyways it’s at the dealership and will find out this afternoon what’s up.
It’s under warranty if either item is defective.

What’s the chance of me installing two defective thermostats?
What’s the chance of the propeller breaking off a 9 month old OEM water pump?

Both are pretty slim tho

 

I had the same thought yesterday with getting pressurized through a head gasket leak or crack in the head via combustion, just seems so unlikely. But maybe not more unlikely than 2 bad thermostats in a row? But is something to check and eliminate as a possibility

 

Yeah both slim, but at this point it's gonna be something that isn't very likely, whether that's 2 bad thermostats or something up with the head hopefully 2 bad thermostats

 

the only reason I think it’s bypassed is because I don’t get the rushing water noise after changing coolant until I turn the heat on.

maybe the radiator is clogged somehow.

 

I was going to cut the inside of one of the thermostat out and install it to see if it was moving water but with three failed thermostats 1) the motorrad 180 I put in 5 months ago 2) the super stant 170 I put in 2 days ago,3) carquest 170 I put In yesterday so I just took it
to the dealership

 

Always a good test to perform. Not uncommon on Toyota engines, they seem to have thin HG sections between combustion and water jacket. I've killed two, and I highly doubt it'll be my last. Easy enough fix anyhow, just a bit labor intensive or cash intensive if you don't do it yourself. I'm a small sample data alone but I've only had 1 bad thermostat ever haha. Always been something else when cooling issues arise. One rad and one heater core dead from coolant going nasty after an undiagnosed HG failure, some rad caps, an upper hose, heater bypass tube (4cyl).... Never had a failed water pump, a leaky one sure, but never entirely split apart and the one bad thermo I'm driving on keeps the fucker too cold (more common failure mode than stuck shut since safety stats are a thing now)

 

Impossible, it’s a new radiator and is new looking inside and zero dirt inside

 

I'm still thinking out loud here, could this keep coolant from circulating? If it's being pressurized from a head gasket leak or similar?

 

It'll just hyper focus heat, temp sensor is up in the head. His rad is massive and Colorado is cold, I'd expect a huge temp differential from top to bottom

 

Yeah it really is a wild unusual situation. It's gonna be something not normal or common to fix, hopefully not head expense shiz though
