I had question, what year tacoma has frame rust problems? Does the 3rd gens have frame rust problems?

its not a recall. it is a warranty enhancement/extension. 12 years unlimited miles I think.
you have to have got the letter and live in the states that they think apply to be covered. 17 is the latest year for it at this time I think.

Yes. All years have problems. The frames are basically the same.

The service enhancement campaign is for 2011-2017 Tacomas. Lucky for us since my son has a 2011 and I just happen to have a 2017. His frame looks rough so waiting until we get the notification that we can take his in and see how well the local dealer supports us on this.

my frame looks fine.. I had touched it up by cleaning some of the small rust spots and sprayed some Frame under carriage protection but over all doesnt look bad ... and I had just bought the truck like 6 months ago dont recall getting no letter...is it to early to tell? Or should I call them and fined out?

I believe all they do is spray some sticky coating on it.

My 2012 has been in the midwest since new. I undercoat it with Eastwood Rust Encapsulator once a year (costs $30 for a quart, brush it on with a paint brush) and I have absolutely zero rust. Frame looks new. It is covered in salt all winter, no issues. Just try to go to a car wash with undercarriage cleaning on the warmer days in the winter, maybe once a week. Really no idea how everyone's frames just rot so bad. Maybe I'm just lucky

It also appears you don't drive your truck very much. I too use Fluid Film and so I know that shit picks up road grime like a damn magnet. Yes, no rust, but the underside of your truck will look like a greasy old sock that's been laying on the highway. In your case, your truck is barely dirty at all, which tells me you haven't driven it much with FF on it.

I got my letter about a week ago for my 2017. It tells me my frame warranty is extended if I take it in and have them apply some undercoating stuff. They will let me know by letter when to schedule for the undercoating. I think it has to be done within 2 years to get the extended warranty.

I got 45k on my truck in 28 months I do drive it. The fluid film in my experience dries to a dull wax like coating in about 2 weeks and takes a lot of effort to rub it off. I’ve included a photo of what it looks like a month after application and I took a rag and rubbed a spot to show the shiny frame underneath. If the fluid film is all oily and greasy for more than a couple weeks my guess is your using too much.

maybe a stupid question but can you paint fluid film over surface rust or try to wire brush it off the best you can

you can but not recommended...I would cover bare metal or rust with a product called POR-15 available on Amazon among other places in chassis black good stuff if you’re doing it yourself.

Ah, there we go. That's what I expected to see. I wouldn't say it dries so much as it just collects a thick film of dirt.

Are we as owners responsible for any kind of frame upkeep ? I'm guessing FF does not jeopardize the warranty . Will Toyota treat our frame with anything for a discount ? Thanks .

I wash the undercarriage before re-application.

I noticed a few rust spots, but here is my 11/15 TX built SR5 a few weeks ago during the process of Fluid Filming it.

Never got a letter about the recall- maybe New Jersey isn't included.

    FWIW...

looks really good IMO. As a jersey guy who just did a fluid film treatment on my 2020, this is assuring to see.

For FWIW here is the rust I noticed on my 2016 SR5 earlier this summer:

This spot, behind the passenger side cab mount, was by far the worst spot. I hit it with POR15 and the POR15 covering paint on top of that and then fluid filmed the crap out of my frame.

I definitely have grime building up on my fluid film as @jowybyo predicts.

So here is my question: when I apply more do I have to clean the old stuff off like @boynoyce ? I don't care if my frame has grimy grease all over it as long as it isn't rusting.
