Something else to think about in the whole Grapes is fired debate is the ad revenue. Tonight Budweiser released a comment that it was awaiting Sportsnets decision and applauds it. When your leading broadcast sponsor calls you up and says they want him gone, he gone. Point blank when you say something decisive and you are, in effect, paid by ad revenue you have to accept in today's world that at some point the other shoe will come down on you like an ant.

Too be clear I wear a poppy and really don't care either way. I'm from a Canadian Military family going back to before their was a Canadian Military. I just enjoy watching people turn this into their new war on the politically correct.

Easy their killer lol. I also remember Grape's past. I'm not going to go get all twisted up for a guy whose previous crusades went full political on a sports talk show. I can see what's happening here. Sponsors forced Sportsnets hand and Grape's will show up on some other media format where he can attract his demographic. Trust me, he's going to make a pile of money off of this one way or another.

Cherry came out about an hour ago and said he shouldn't of said you people and would of apologised this Saturday if given the chance. Interesting to say the least after his comments yesterday that he wouldn't apologize.

Why not just say all Canadians should wear poppies then ? I think the whole conversation would have been flipped on its head and he would be getting full support from everybody , but thats not what he said or meant and pretending otherwise is a bit much .

This is very weird. Can't cut him, probably can't trade him and have him for another year. So all of that money is in the press-box. I get it, that he should not have been signed in the first place and isn't playing great. I dunno, weird deal there.

As far as the Don Cherry thing...I see both sides. He always has this "us vs them" mentality when it comes to Canada. He is always pretty quick to single anyone else out as an outsider. He has made comments about American players many times, that have pissed me off. But it is what it is. I don't think it should be taken personally. What he said the other day was a bit of a shot at everyone but specifically immigrants to Canada. And while it could be taken a few different way, I think there is a bit of an inflated fake outrage over it. I took it as he is very passionate about Canada and the Vets. And basically saying to come there and enjoy what is there, show some respect/thanks for that. I personally don't see that as racist or being a terrible person. Just a guy who is very passionate about those things and comes off a bit stand-offish....which is who he is. I think it is very similar to how he tends to subliminally insult non-Canadian players, while propping the 'Canadian way' up on a perch. Only difference is, social justice warriors can take this latest thing and run with it. My opinion.

Yup and all it takes is one day in Toronto to see he's right. Nobody and I mean literally nobody younger wore poppies. They just don't give a shit.

 

Ugh and this is the problem I have with Don Cherry. Like I said, I come from a military family and respect our vets, but wasn't his job to talk hockey and not go on what really amounts to another "Pinko" rant? I'm a proud Canadian, hell I had a pretty spirited discussion with @def67 not too long ago on TW about how he doesn't want to be a Canadian anymore, and I don't like the way Cherry tried to leverage the Poppy into something it's not. It's a symbol of remembrance and not a rallying cry or political tool. Anyways the sponsors had enough and he gone. If Cherry wants to push his agenda he will have plenty of opportunities to do so, just not on coaches corner.

If someone wants to make a real impact beyond cancelling their cable subscription how about going down to a RC Legion and getting involved in helping veterans? A buck on a poppy is nothing, that organization is dying and words won't save it.
