Dang, that's a heavy trailer!

 

Lately I’ve been pondering upgrading the truck. She feels like she’s struggling sometimes on long trips and especially inclines. If upgrading would do me better, should I upgrade to a 3rd Gen Taco or go with a full size truck?

Or am I just underestimating my truck? I pull this trailer probably 10-15 times a year from anywhere from 1-8 hour trips. It’s fairly weighed down with lacrosse equipment, tents and grates for displays.

 

I tow a 7x 12 tandem axle enclosed and I would say I know its back there but it handles it just fine. Everyone on here says the 4.0 has more pulling power than the 3rd gen.

But if you don't feel comfortable I say go full size, but if you take it realisticly you should be fine.

 

I pull a few trailers. One of them being a 5x14 enclosed v nose tandem. Loaded with tools, I'm usually 3000lbs. Flat everywhere here. Very little highway driving. Coming from 3 previous v8's, yes I feel it, however, it tows it well. And from my experience (myself included) when you have almost unnecessary power available you tend to use it. When towing, it's about safety, not how fast you get there. Just my 2 cents.

 

It's not about the weight of the trailer necessarily. The wind resistance of an enclosed trailer will put an incredible drag on a Tacoma. Mine would downshift hard (to 3rd) to maintain 70 if it caught a gust of a headwind.

This only came in at 3,250 lbs loaded with 2 sleds. It's not much weight, but it sure is a lot of wind for a Tacoma to pull against. I'm an advocate of just going full size V8 or ecoboost (if that's your thing) from the start. There is no noticeable mpg gain of a v6 midsize truck vs a v8 full size. I'm not saying I regret the Tacoma, but I should have sold it sooner for a Tundra or gone to a Tundra from the start.

 

I feel like my Taco handles it fine, but peace of mind may be worth it to me to look at upgrading.

I’m careful when towing, try not to exceed 75mph on the interstate. The was tranny replaced with a non-OEM one shortly before I bought it so in the back of my mind I’m worried about messing that up.

I’m looking at a 2016 V8 Silverado. Any input on those? From what I’ve read online the MPG would be similar to what I have now in the Taco, but I’ll have much more peace of mind when towing and some more room inside the cabin too.

 

Drove cross country with a V8 GMC Sierra, got about 21-23 most of the way. Best was 26 coming down out of New Mexico into Texas, thinking it was mostly a downhill slope the whole way. In town average 16-18 depending on the heavy foot. Haven’t towed a full tank yet to see how that goes but I expect it to be on par with the Taco. Fortunately we don’t have the west coast gas prices out here so it doesn’t sting as bad at fill-ups ($60+ when I was in Nevada)

It’s about 4100+ lbs dry. Weighed it recently with camping gear, tools, etc., but no food or clothes and it was 4800 lbs. Max tow weight on this Tacoma is 6400 lbs. My goal is to keep it 1,000 under max and I should be able to do that.
