Well something happened today again with my truck. I heard a loud Clunking Noise and then the truck shut off by itself. The A/T Tem overheat gauge came on. I have to restart the truck and then it drive fine. Im kinda worry so I just want what you guys have an opinions on. I was in panic, I did not take a picture of the gauge.

Holy cow man. On a 2017? 3-year 36k miles and get yourself a rental from the dealer.

gotta learn to drive on the white stuff.. I highly recommend anyone that doesnt typically drive in or on snow to get out there and spin their tires a bit... learn how your truck reacts, so you know what to expect, and ALWAYS HAVE SOME WEIGHT IN THE BED!!!! 250-400lbs of sand tubes, or bags of rock salt.. whatever you want to put back there... but please put some weight in the rear..

Your truck shouldn’t do that at all. My 2018 went 35k miles before rear ended. No issues. Our other 2016 has 70k miles. No issues. I would recommend Michelin defenders. They stick like no other. Better than Duratracs.

If you have the off road Kellar’s, they are not bad. The Dunlop or open country 17a are no good.

“My traction was off” mean that i turned it off. The loud noise from the rear and then the truck shut off. Nothing to do with the tires

my only guess is an ice chunk fell off and went under the tire... somehow shockedloaded the trans/engine, and it shutoff for safety... did it drive ok afterwards? find it odd it did that.. sounds more like an electrical issue, or fuel cutoff.... no codes? no CEL? it may have spat out a code, but not enough to trip CEL....

So, what gen 4 Runner did you have. My avatar is our 04 SR5.
I like my Tacoma but then only got it because I was too cheap to get the limited with Awd.

I’ll have to throw luck in there too. I’m practically a neurotic when driving in the winter. Getting rear ended by someone whose poorly prepared in snow is a pass time in early winter.

Excellent advice. Added Weight is the cheapest thing to do for added traction. It does work against you when stopping in snow....so traction tires make a good combination.

stopping should be accounted for, never "follow directly behind anyone.. can't drive like you do in the summer, or in a city... thats just dumb.. decent tires, and some weight go a long way towards decent winter driving experience.. in my 1 ton duelly I used to put 1000-1200lbs back there... also had a fished 8' HD storm guard plow out front.. didnt make it unstopplable, but it handled all winter conditions... had trouble when getting stuck, most trucks didnt have enough weight to move my truck, or pullit sideways.. but we managed..

lol, thats not a blizzard.... thats just snow, and very light snow... you can still see the road.. blizzard driving is when all you can see are the snowbanks on the side of the road, or maybe the tire tracks of another vehicle that is in front of you... driven in an ice storm with my honda accord, no issues, only had all seasons on.. driven a blizzard in my cx-5 on christmas day two years ago, and made it about 30 minutes out of town before we realized there were no plows running yet, and the cx-5 didnt like deep snow very much 5" deep, whiteout conditions.... had to turn around, and cancel our christmas plans with family just 2 hours away..

I had two 5th Gen 4Runners, but grew up driving them. My father had one of each, minus the 4th Gen, when they cut out the manual transmission.
Kinda the only truck I wanted, but for the features I wanted in the newest rendition, it would cost me nearly 15K above the cost of my Taco. Plus, realistically, I need an open bed more than I need a closed cargo area...

Glad you pulled it out. Sometimes a bit of gas will pull you straight, especially if the vehicle has a lopsided weight ratio. Damn hard to do sometimes.

All one needs to do is slow down to 35-40mph. Diesels can go faster than you safely can. Lots of snow like that here in Chicagoland.

@Navigator1 Sorry, man. My response was a little passive aggressive; woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday, and it went in your direction.

You are correct, in all honesty: Winter tires are definitely a good bet - and most drivers (experienced or not,) would benefit from their use. Some vehicles (with experienced drivers behind the wheel) will do better than the average commuter (definitely with them, but also without them.) The same probably applies in dry or wet conditions, as well. lol

    Hope there’s no hard feelings.

@Dagosa - conveniently, we got nearly 10” of snow yesterday, so I went to Home Depot, grabbed about 275lbs (6 bags) of bagged sand, and laid em out in the bed, spread across the wheels. What a difference. 4WD and some extra weight made it feel close to driving my old 4Runner. Thanks for the recommendation on weight and material!
