Rear Diff oil brand/type? Help!

    Correct, the 08+ Sports do not have a mechanical limited slip differential. The have a regular open diff with a electronic feature that uses the rear brakes to mimic the effects of an LSD.

    The 05-07 Sport Tacomas have a label on the back of the differential that specifically states to use gear oil with an LSD additive, the later model Sports do not have that sticker

    Ok last question. Will it hurt to put diff oil with LSD additives into a diff that doesn't need it?

    Did they really? I coulda sworn it was 08 but maybe I confused the last year with the year it started being non-mechanical...thanks for the correction

    I don't replace the crush washer. I just Teflon tape the plugs real well before reinstalling. I get no seepage at all.

    Yes. Literally anything you buy that says 75-90 and gf-5 is fine.

    The additive won't hurt anything if you put it in a non-LSD diff.

    No. I do not. I asked if it would be ok to use Diff oil with LSD additive and a couple of people said it was ok.

    It wouldn't make sense for the additive to hurt it...there's nothing in an non-LSD diff that isn't also in an LSD diff. Only difference between the two is the limited slip inside one of them. If the additive hurt the non-LSD diff it would do the same damage to the same parts inside an LSD one too (which it doesn't, which is why it's fine to use).

    I've used the Valvoline stuff with the LSD additive before in my e-locker rear because it was the only 75w90 that the store had. Not going to hurt anything

    Any 75/90 will be fine. Just pick one and go with it. I used SuperTech in my old Mazda's tranny and rear diff without issue.

    On my Taco I've serviced the rear diff twice...30k and 60k miles and went with Mobil1.

    I dropped the spare and attached a bit of hose to one of the bottle tops. Plenty of clearance and no need for a transfer pump.

    ECGS disclaims in the opening paragraph that all this discussion is based on opinion. They’ve just run their own tests to support a hypothesis. Not that they aren’t credible but they say all that for a reason.

    I personally use Mobil1
    $28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75w-90 with the LS additive on my ‘12 sport and it has done fine.

    I think the takeaway from all this is that the act of changing it at the recommended intervals does more than the brand/type of oil you’re putting in (as long as it’s close to recommended weight/viscosity obviously).
