Reason 15681 I'm glad we're not having kids. Worked a claim today where a teenager took out 2 cars and damaged 2 homes. Parents get to deal with the aftermath of his actions.

1 car he ran a red causing a collision. They went to move out of the road he panicked fled scene lost control went through 3 fences and another car finally hitting a house.

30k mile service on the Taco when I get back Friday. Tearing apart my friend’s engine is sure making me appreciate the simple service procedures like draining and filling a manual transmission/differential. Called around to local dealers to see what their quote was just for shits and giggles. Anywhere from $400-$515.

Got everything I needed to do it myself for $165 (engine oil/filter, cabin and engine air filters, diff gear oil, mtf, transfer case fluid). :bananadance:

Where did you get the transfer case fluid?

yeah - what did you get and where from - I am at 25k now and need to plan ahead - is friction modifier required?

Ordered it from this dealer here and they said they’d send it to the local dealer near me for free. This was about the cheapest I could find. Toyota says the Tacoma takes 1.1 quarts, so I’m gonna reuse a little of the old stuff to get the full amount in there. I couldn’t justify spending almost another $60 for a whole extra quart lol. Other folks have used ravenol’s fluid, but I figured with a transfer case every 30k, I’d rather just spend a little extra. Everything else for the service is pretty cheap anyways.

I guess the LF stand for low friction, and it’s proprietary to Toyota’s transfer cases, or so I’ve been told. Take it with a grain of salt. I do know that the Toyota fluid works much much better than standard 75w gear oil though. Not so much in manual xfer cases like in my old 4Runner or FJ, but definitely in automatic actuated xfer cases like in the more modern Tacomas. Whatever modifier is already included so you won’t need to add anything extra. Sadly most local dealer will throw whatever bulk gear oil they have in the xfer case to save money.

Used this for the last 100k miles and on previous vehicles. It’s what east coast gear supply sends you when you regear. Perfect for front/ rear diff and transfer case. 054B756F-3B70-49DB-86DC-DC29868F8F95.jpg
