Rustproof or not??

What is Toyota doing that any other manufacture is not doing then? For example, this is my first Tacoma, prior to this I have been a life time ford owner.. 8 fords over 30 years and not a single issue with rust... ever and until just recently lived at the foot of the Rockies in MT....

 

Does New England use salt or something? Maybe that is the difference. Salt used on roads are VERY corrosive. MT just recently went to a brine solution but where I lived it was not used.

 

Exactly. Seems to be something people on here dont fully understand. Salt and /or that brine shit makes stuff rust. End of story..

Based on the evidence presented here, I vote YES to the OP. I don't think you can go wrong with that.
Moreover, I would advice coating all metal hoses running lubricants underneath to the engine. Those suckers often get neglected and are expensive and a PITA to replace every 3-5 years :/

I am not sure if it is that or that states are still using that as a solution. That stuff is just as bad for the environment as it is for your truck. Why parts of MT (at least where I lived) banned it. Went sand and closed roads to all non-awd vehicles.

I thought all places banned salt/brine long ago to be honest, why I was perplexed.

 

I wish they would ban it here in Maine. Most any vehicle can drive through the snow with good tires and common sense. If you cant make it, stay the frig home..

I did mine last weekend. Used 5 of the spray paint style cans, including doing inside the rocker holes, doors, and tailgate.

Used Woolwax off Amazon. Got the tube with 360 degree sprayer with it.

I also suggest one of the $7 paint can sprayer handles. Makes it wayyy easier.

Also wear vinyl gloves and clothes you dont care about. I had overspray and a couple drips on mine.

 

Yup. This stuff is a real pain to wash out. I find pre-treating with detergent is the only thing that works

 

Amen to that. It's funny, the town I work in has signs that say "sensible salting requires sensible driving"

They then proceed to lay a metric fuck-ton of salt down if there's any snow. More than any other nearby town by a wide margin.

 

They probably understand the average driver has no sense at all, thus need enough salt to melt the pavement.

This is just my observation with drives in WA state, I truly feel 90% of them got their drivers license from a dark alley out of someone's trunk.

 

I think NY is the worst with the salt use. They dump it everywhere.... indiscriminately.

Bought my Tacoma in December 2018. Paid for the Toyota Platinum Rust Proofing Package. This includes the Sound Guard / Undercoating and Rust Guard (body panels). Our roads are often white from the amount of salt used during the winter so I thought it was a good idea. Seemed to work well on the Rav4s I previously owned.

When I was installing my winter tires (November 10) I noticed rust spots on the rear end, frame and leaf springs. More than what I was expecting for a vehicle less than a year old and one that was undercoated when purchased new. To be honest, I can't tell if the undercoating was actually done. I thought that goes on thick and should be visible? The Rust Guard is visible on the body panels (yellowish wax like coating) but I don't see or feel any undercoating on the undercarriage.

I emailed the Service Manager at my dealer and got a call back within the hour. He wants me to bring the truck in ASAP so they can clean up the rust areas and reapply undercoating. Have an appointment for Monday, November 18. I'm thinking the undercoating wasn't done when I purchased the truck. Can anyone give me an idea on how to identify or tell if the undercoating was done?

 

I have lived in Illinois 57 years and have never rustproofed none of my trucks. Never lost any sleep over it either.

 

It wasn't done. And dont do it. Get your money back. Go with fluid film!!

 

thats insane, i had mine factory undercoated. but just had it fluid filmed for insurance.

 

Nope. City puts down salt brine where I live in southeastern Illinois. All the towns around here do that I know of. You see allot of cinders and sand used out in the country and smaller villages.
