The 5.29 Mega Thread!!

How difficult is the ecgs built front and rear swap. I’ll be doing myself. Been reading the fsm on it. Truck will be on jack stands and prolly just bite the bullet and do it at the same time I install the lift.

 

I’ll let you know soon. I’m ordering mine tomorrow. Their lead time is about 2wks right now.

for you guys running 33”s and 5.29’s how has your experience been driving in the 70-75mph range? Was it just a small adjustment getting used to turning around 2400rpm?

 

Well, I'm 20 miles in and it drives as smooth as silk. Definitely the right ratio to get. I wouldn't even consider 4.88.

The install isn't that hard if you have a decent toolset.

Took me about an hour to rip out the rear diff and about 1:15 for the front. Took about the same in reverse. Except going back in, the passenger side CV wasn't cooperating, so I had to put him in time out for 30 minutes with a nice 5lb.

If you can solicit the help of a friend, it will go quicker. A legit shop with a lift would be ideal.

In other news, my gosh how much fluid that rear diff takes. Good Lord. It took the full 4.2qts as the book says.

Sorry, been offline for a few weeks. Thanks for your input. I know every truck/driver will be different but what's interesting is my mpg didn't get any better or frankly any worse after the re-gear. As part of a test shortly after I got the '16 I drove to and from work on a side road that maxes at 45mph and I still wasn't getting over 15mpg. This was also before I put the 285's on.

Don't get me wrong, now I can definitely tell a difference after the re-gear when going up hill. I read through this thread first and did it anyway because I really do enjoy this truck. Miss my 2nd gen a lot

I'd probably consider an MT if they had it in the exact configuration I wanted at the time of purchase. The only MT they had was their unicorn which had 500 other unnecessary bells and whistles and the corresponding markup.

In other news, I am chewing on getting a little side sports car and was reviewing the Supra. AT only. Really?? Who the hell would buy an AT sports car?

 

So I found someone intown that could install my gears.
They want to use Royal Purple? Bad idea over Lucas, makes a difference?
At least I found someone who does this on the reg.

 

Neither of them are the best, but it doesn't matter, it's coming out in 500 miles. Their quality of work and parts choices are way more important than which lube they choose.

After break-in go with Amsoil,Redline,Schaffer's.

I would probably go with Valvoline or something similar for the first 500mi then throw in the good stuff after the initial break-in.

 

Um, if you're the customer, why don't you get to choose?

 

have you considered buying the preassembled diffs from ECGS and installed them that way? That’s what I’m doing.

if your close to Charlotte we can get them installed for a reasonable price.

 

Finally the day has come. I am schedule for install next week.

I appreciate everyone’s input and keeping it on topic. This has helped me tremendously, and allowed me to pull the trigger on it, so thank you.

My last question is, I remember several of you saying that the Seals that come with the Nitro Kit are crap (correct me if I am wrong), but I thought I read that on a few posts.
If this is the case should I order a seal kit for both diffs from Toyota.
Anyone have part numbers handy?

Just installed yesterday. Initial break in was completed by the shop. I'm currently working on the 500 mile break in (approx 300 miles on at the moment) before changing the oil. My question is am I supposed to do something to break in the 4x4? I've read all kinds on contradictory info on this. Some say drive in 4x4, others say not required, etc etc.

 

Mine too. I towed a 16 Airstream (3700lb trailer 450 lb in bed)) to Yellowstone from SLC then to Grand Teton and back to SLC over a week. Did really well.
