Aside from aesthetics, and collecting debris, is there any issue to NOT welding the plate on your CMC? I can’t see it being structural at all.

It becomes structural in a front end collision. It’s been pointed out that the safety of Tacomas comes from the cab mount helping to deflect an impact.

Plating in a cab mount chop is a complete waste of time and money in my honest opinion. This opinion is primary based on not giving a shit and is unaffected by logic, reason, scientific or empirical evidence.

Even if I wanted to...theres nothing left to even weld to on the bottom.

I mainly wanted to leave mine unplated for a bit to make sure I cut far enough back, rather than welding 3 times.

How did this go for you? I did the whole cut and weld twice so I'm wishing I had left it open. Still getting a rub when I hit a hard left uphill going fast, can't tell where though.

No problems so far, and I've done a good bit of off-road driving. I plan to get it welded soon, once I find someone I trust to do it around here.

    But....this is not sheet metal...

Edit - I guess technically it is, after looking up the definition. I've always thought of sheet metal at just the thinner stuff.

Meh. It's been like that for at least 5 years now. I would sooner do a relocate then plate them in at this point. I was handed a set of plates the day I first cut them for 33s and never welded them up because I knew I would be going to 35s. Now I just don't care.

Lol mine looked the same way for a few years. I did it myself with a grinder. When I went to 35s I started rubbing again so I got the cab mounts relocated. Now they only rub on the firewall, not a big deal lol.20190529_181416.jpg 20190529_181427.jpg

My buddy (who gave me the plates) helped me with cuts for 33s, and I hacked the rest off when I went to 35s. Spare parts. Dead weight. Who cares?

If you're looking at my cab mounts it's because you either wheel with me or you're a passer by who wants to see what I've done. Pure aesthetics. Theres enough meat there to hold the cab to the frame and it's easy to monitor. I can see it. I will relocate cab mounts only if I go to 37s which i am disinterested in right now.

Yeah I did it because I do plan on going bigger than 35 when I upgrade my front suspension

I left my cab mounts open for like 8 years… and just had to get my frame replaced due to rust. I had rust in multiple areas, but the worst was inside the boxed section by the cab mount. I think the round hole in the frame (inside the cab mount) directs road salt and crap into the frame.

I will be either doing a cab mount relocate and weld a plug in that hole, or I’ll cab mount chop and plate it.

You mean this spot? Yeah...i'm feeling kinda stupid now. I think I will be dialing back my rhetoric on why I think plating cab mounts is a waste of time. Plate your cab mounts kids.
