New truck, first scheduled oil change at 10,000... really?

We can all choose what to believe in a forum or wikipedia. But here’s the thing, some of the same folk here that say follow the manual recommendation for oil change, will tell you it’s ok to run a 4X4 on hard dry surface.

But this is what the manual says about that on section 4-5 page 247:

“Driving on dry and hard surface roads in “4H” or “4L” position may cause
drive component oil leakage, seizure, or other problems resulting in an
accident. Further, it may cause tire wear and increased fuel consumption.”

Your money, your truck or at least till its paid for

 

Neither will mine, but it will still only be done every 12 months. My first oil change was at 12 months but only 3k miles.

 

If you want the oil change, ask your dealer. I told mine I did a bunch of towing with it and they didn't charge me for the 5k oil change. Your experience might vary, but mine was quite nice.

 

I agree with the "Your money, your truck" part, only one person can tell you when you "want" to do an oil change and that is You.

The difference between forums users stating you can drive on dry pavement in 4x4 and an engineer stating you do not "NEED" to change the oil till 10,000 Miles is one is an engineer and the other is not.

 

My first change was a 5,000 miles cause new. I just did my second change on the weekend at 15,000 miles. Oh and I am an engineer.

So, you torque your u-bolts to 37 foot-pounds? It’s straight from those same engineers, so it must be fact.

 

Engineers also designed the Ford Explorer and it would flip over rather easy because the tires were exploding due to the low tire pressure recommendation they themselves put on the driver’s door. The tire would overheat and explode because of the low pressure and the vehicle would loose control and flip over.

The service manual also tells you to remove a bunch of things including the intake manifold on our truck at great waste of time and expense just to replace the spark plugs. A technician can do it in a half hour without removing a bunch of stuff.

Moral of the story, who are we to believe, nobody’s perfect

 

Good point, at the end of the day it is your truck. If you are happy then that is all that counts. Great thing about forums is everyone has their own idea of "what is right" and they all sound good to that person. I, personally, will most likely change the first time at 5k and then go about 10k. Depending on what type of driving I do also.

I do place more weight on engineers over laymen.. that is just me. Like I tell people that hire me "if you knew how to do it, then why did you hire me" when they start to give their expert opinions on "the right way" to do something.

 

Yeah, but what are the largest tires I can put on a stock OR with no lift and no rubbing?!

 

The last time i looked, i have a filter that is made to remove very small particles from .... well ... oil....

I feel like that’s a typo. The engineers spec’d 73 ft-lb and a technical writer wrote 37. Then the editor missed it.

 

My neighbor had a old mini truck from the 1970’s, that thing ran forever. Only needed two engine rebuilds, a new trans, rear end, two ps pumps, three radiators, three carb rebuilds, 4 new wheel bearings twice, new electrical harness, interior reupholstered, patchwork in the body and welding on the frame. That truck was awesome, ran forever.

Oil should be changed every year no matter what
I do it every 6 mo because i live off a long dirt road
