It's because there's no reason to shut the engine down. Nothing to do with the amount of work I have to do. Justify it any way you want but it's a poor design.

I knew about this before buying my truck, but I’ll never be installing remote start when it operates like this. Hope someone comes up with a way around it needing to be started twice, but doubtful it’s possible. Needless wear and tear and seems half ass. There are many other ways they could have done it while maintaining decent security.

Liability... disguised as safety. Only takes one bad apple to ruin the fun for all the rest. Why you also have to have a safety label on knives stating they are sharp...

Lots of threads on this topic. All Toyota and Lexus vehicles with push button start exhibit the same behavior. Engine stops upon opening door. Safety and theft deterrent.

I’m not here to justify it, just to laugh at how lazy some people are and how they complain about the most minuscule of problems.

Heating up the truck or cooling down the truck before getting in is really nice. The auto shutoff after 15 minutes is probably there to keep someone's house from filling up with carbon monoxide when parked in a garage.

Being able to jump in and drive it away might not be a good idea because of kids and thieves, plus, there will need to be a fail-safe method to confirm the driver has the fob. Shifting the car into reverse (or drive) as a fail-safe to confirm the fob is present is not a safe switch because the truck will no longer be in park. The only logical switch is the door... :notsure: I guess you could use the start button, but that would need to physically lock/unlock the shifter?

It would be nice if it could be configured in Tech Stream. My concern is related to premature wearing of the starter ( or starter contacts) due to having to start twice for each remote start instance.

My wife had an OEM starter on her 2017 Forester that did the same thing. Hers was non push start, so it’s not just a Toyota thing.

It’s how some manufacturers do it. Most manufacturers do it correctly, but Toyota is not one of them.

that’s still Toyota. Toyota owns a huge share in Subaru’s parent company, which is why most Subaru electronics are actually Toyota (along with many other parts)

The same Toyota/lexus with a different remote start? Prove it. It's programmed in the alarm to shut off when the door is opened. Show me an example of this. Otherwise I call bullshit

I'm pretty much from the arctic circle and personally I wouldn't care if the engine shuts off when I open the door as long as the heat doesn't escape. It's way better than nothing which is why I'm looking at aftermarket systems right now...

Toyota owns 20%, but this doesn’t prove they make the remote starters for Subaru.

Ive never seen a remote start stay running with any smart key toyota.

You CAN program them to treat the starter as a key and no time out, but thats risky, you could have steering lock up failure with a power shut off. Fuck that.

Well after 8 months of owning a 19 Forester, i just found out that i can remote start, lock/unlock, locate and some other security system. I have to pay a subscription though, 9-15 with options or 119 a year. If i remote start it the car doesnt shutoff when opening the door but the steering wheel locks and you cant shift from P if i dont have the keyfob. Im interested on a remote start for my tacoma and i dont mind it shutting down when opening the door but yea, i wish theres a way around it.

The 3rd gens have been out for several years. Multiple remote start companies have tried to figure it out and concluded it is hard wired into the system. It just isn't meant to be. It really isn't that big of a deal. I live in the Midwest with cold weather 4 to 5 months of the year with remote start since I have had the truck. No issues with the extra start and stop on those super cold days.

Today’s starters are built for 500,000 plus cycles (think all the start stop vehicles out on the road, Toyota included). At 3 times per day, that’s 167,000 days or 457 years. I wouldn’t be too concerned with the starter wearing out. That’s a thing of the 80s and 90s, not today.

For real. Oh no, the horror of having to get in and push the start button! Never understood why this is such a thing. I’d actually prefer that someone not be able to get in my truck and drive away when it’s warming up in my driveway.
