Perfect, did you do both hoses?

 

Because when you don't do your own work, like @CHMM is in the position of, it's usually cheaper to pay a shop to just install new ones rather than the time and hassle of them burning out the rubber bushings and installing the Whiteline ones. At least that's my knowledge from calling around a few shops in the Colorado area since I'm in the position of replacing my bushings.

 

What Brett said. In my opinion it's what makes them the best affordable UCA for our trucks.

If you have a heat gun and the factory bottle jack there should be no need to burn them out.

 

Had an evap code for a while. With emissions coming up I took it to a buddy that works at the dealer and checked the system, turned out to be the roll over valve was cracked. $76 dollars and 20 minutes later. Trucks fixed. Don't have any pics tho.

 

That’s correct. It’s cheaper to just put on new ones is what I was told from the shops around. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to do my own work. I can’t balance my workload for the last 5 years. It’s been 7 days a week non-stop and I can’t find good help right now.

I had plenty of coil to do both, but I only did the lower. (comes in 4 ft lengths)

I'm running a silicone upper hose, which is more rigid than the rubber.

 

I guess I get that.

But man, I'd go nukin futz if I wasn't able to work on my own truck. And I'd probably also be bankrupt and divorced.

Mmm not much better clearance from what I can tell. I have them and not sure I gained anything there. Certainly aren't going to crack though

Installed a reman head from cylinderhead.com on my buddy's 98 3RZ. I helped him buy the truck back in the summer of 2000 and he was my best man, so helping a friend like that out and doing it right was important to me.

It all started this spring. He said the CEL was on and the truck was down on power and idling rough. He brought it over to me and I scanned the CEL. P0300 and a few other codes I didn't write down. I knew the P0300 could be a few different things but that it likely wasn't good. I did a compression check. Cylinders 3 and 4 were in spec 185ish but 1 and 2 were way low.



Did a leak down. Cyl. 1 and 2 were leaking badly out of the exhaust valves



Turns out he had the usual crack in his exhaust manifold and in 169k miles had never checked the valves. Everything pointed to burnt exhaust valves and seats. In doing research here and Yota Tech, all the above symptoms pointed to the head casting likely being cracked too. There are zero decent machine shops within a few hundred miles of our town and after talking (or not talking; one didn't return my calls) with the machine shops around here for a valve job and possible cast aluminum welding, I quickly came to the decision to order a remanufactured head. Because of the low cost, ease of returning the core and solid reputation, we ordered a head from cylinderhead.com

No turning back now!


With the head old off, I was expecting to see super-burnt valves and crack(s) in the casting but this one looked really good. I likely could have done a DIY valve lap but the new head had already shipped.

What do you pros think? The pic doesn't show that exhaust valves on 1 and 2 are not seating the same way they are in 3 and 4



While I was waiting for the new head to be delivered, I did some other maintenance. The intake plenum was FILTHY!


I cleaned and re-o-ringed the injectors, installed new belts, new fuel filter and cleaned the throttle body and IAC valve too.

 

Old head off, time to strip it down and rebuild the valve cover



New head is here! Transfer studs and brackets


Cylinder hone looks like new so time to set down a new Toyota HG.


Torque it all to spec


And start putting it all back together




Installed a new exhaust manifold, new thermostat, new coolant (of course), cleaned the MAF and it runs like a champ! Here's to another 20 years of trouble-free service.
