Does anyone have pics or (even better!) some measurements of a homebrew rack that goes over a Softopper? The SOS and AllPro racks are nice, but it seems like it would be simple enough to fab something up out of tubing, and cheaper to boot.

Specifically, I'd like to be able to still fold the topper down and also have enough room to roll the sides/windows up. (I have a 3rd gen Softopper on a 2nd gen, so it sits below the cab, which should make that easier). Just wondering how tall or wide it would need to be. I'm curious about the ways folks have attached gear to the rack too.
So basically, anybody have some ideas I can steal?

Mine isn’t a diy I made but Jerry (BAMF) made this one. Fits over my soft topper and clears the cab for surfboards and stuff

Here’s the BAMF one Jerry made. I think it’s the only one he’s made. This could give you an idea.

Nothing against Mobtown, they do amazing work, but I don't love the looks of this rack (just a personal aesthetic), but do appreciate the versatility of it.

That's a different style! On a related note, how do you like that Bestop? I debated getting one of those buuuut, having had one on a Jeep for a long, long time, I was a little hesitant. Curious how you like that one.
Interesting. Can you fold the top up with the rack on? (Obviously you couldn't with the tent on).

I got the best top used. If I were gonna do it again I would go softtopper. I don’t see many best tops around but see a lot of softtopers. I like the windows for the dogs being back there but I’ve had the rear window crack and replaced it as well as a hole in the canopy part. Softtoper brand looks better made and higher quality in my opinion. I only use the topper occasionally and I take it off frequently. The hardware has rusted to hell as well on my best top.

Yeah, sounds like my old Jeep top. Great looking truck in any case!

I'd like to build an over-the-softopper bed rack in the springtime, so subb'd here.

Whenever a thread comes up, I save a pic, so I've got a dozen or so pics saved but am not good about labeling them so not sure who makes these.

When I build one, I'm interested in these criteria:

1). as tight as possible to still allow the topper to fold down

2). removable crossbars as I load motorcycles and want the option of just removing a crossbar or two and not the entire bed rack. There's a vendor here (that I can't find) that builds one where the crossbars slide/adjust on a laser cut plate. Kinda cool design. I'll try to find the pic

This one kinda fits the bill for me. Easy to build, too. Just a few of bends in some 2.5 inch tubing

And I like the looks of this one (but maybe it's all the other cool bolt on goodies)

@Unchained 5150 sos doesn’t show it on their website but I sent them an email and they said they make one for the long bed too, Is that the long bed rack or the regular size?

    enough to have fun

Regarding your first point, IIRC the softopper swings in an forward AND upwards motion when collapsing, making a rack that's "tight" to the top renders this function useless. Luckily, the softopper is held in with two quick clips that are easy to remove from outside the bed or inside, and the whole topper can just slide out. The only type that can do that have either removeable top bars or don't hug the sides tightly

I sacrificed this option to get the sides as tight as I could to the softopper:
