Undercoating....

I recently purchased a 2005 tacoma, i live in upstate new york where the snow is bad and the salt in the roads makes everything a mess! I considered undercoating myself using the rustoleum product. I was also turned on to the idea of using truck bed liner (rhino liner). I was hoping someone had some input, success anything....

 

I purchased an 06 TRD Sport last year and live up in Saratoga. I went down and got an undercoating done last year and it was probably the best thing I could of done. The truck looks brand new because the frame and other components visible are all black and held up no problem throughout the winter. They did a real good job and didn't spray anything that was a moving part (driveshaft), exhaust part, or plastic. The only downfall was if I ever have to replace the fuel lines or brake lines it is going to be a PITA.

 

Forgot to add........ I would probably just spend the $250 and have a shop do it. Any good shop will give you a 5 year warranty and re spray any spots that get messed up. Just make sure you get a place that uses the petroleum based product as it seems to take salt and sand

 

I live in Northeast Pa, we have the same weather. I have just always got under the truck in the fall and spring twice a year, with wire wheel on a cordless drill... and a wire brush and just went crazy. Use some rustoleum paint and you will be fine.

The bedliner stuff does last longer, but if you have to start changing parts its a pain.

 

With a truck that old the first thing you have to do is remove the rust. You can spray whatever you want over the rust and it will look pretty, but underneath the moisture will be trapped inside and continue to eat you frame from the inside out. One day a big chuck of that undercoating will fall off, exposing a very nice cancer spot.

 

and they will replace the frames for free.....no big deal

 

The truck was originally from Florida so it has not seen a new york winter yet (thank god) so we are starting with a cleanish slate. Hope to get some quotes today on the coating. The truck is pretty clear underneath a little spot hear and there may be easy to do it myself. Thanx for the help guys!

 

I'm living down in Mass now where apparently no one knows how to drive in winter as they use more salt and liquid de-icer than I've ever seen before. I'm from VT and went home last weekend and got my truck oil undercoated. I've got friends trucks that have gotten it done every year and everything underneath the truck is like brand new (under a bunch of oil). Works great, I dunno if they do it in NY. I know mass doesn't but VT and NH do. Just throwin out an option

 

I fixed it for you! I came from upstate NY and am now in MA also, it takes some getting used to. No offense MA natives, but you guys have to agree that driving in MA is somewhat of a sport.

 

I have heard great things about the POR 15 products.. anyone have any first hand experience with those?

 

Where'd you end up taking your truck for the treatment? I'm originally from that area so if you could recommend a shop that will do it for around $250 I'll probably get it done there one of the times I'm home.

 

Went and got the rustoleum bed liner sold in gallon cans. Plan to paint it on tomorrow during the day. I also bought VHT Flame proof ceramic header and exhaust paint which worked amazingly well on my old kawasaki motorcycle headers so i figured lets give it a try. Hopefully it works out well save me a couple hundred bucks doing it myself. Ill post later on hopefully with good results!
