What is the key requirement here? Better mpg? A stick shift?

If it’s better gas mileage, you’re going to lose so much money selling your truck and moving back to a high gas mileage sports car that it will take several years to break even.

If it’s getting rid of the automatic, I think you ought to give it more time.

Your truck is NOT rapidly losing resale value. Therefore there’s no reason to make a rash decision.

If you drive it for a year you will at least get some of your money's worth.

If you get rid of it now it's like throwing 10k away and you have no car....

    Think of it that way

72 miles one way or round trip?

I traded in my 12 civic @ 42mpg for an 08 OR DCSB with a 36 mile commute and I do not regret it one bit.

I also deal with lots of snow during the winter. My fuel bill is double what it was with the civic, but I KNOW I’m gonna get to and from work. Piece of mind does cost real dollars.

If you can learn to live with the auto I’d give it a shot and enjoy the Tacoma. The loss would take a long time to recoup just in fuel cost. I’m a commuter as well and struggled when trading BMW diesel and the increased fuel cost with Tacoma. But, it’s not a big deal so enjoy the truck. If you hate it and it’s bugging you every day.......trade it and don’t look back. Life’s too short.

Ouch, chalk it up as stupid tax. Traded a 5 year old , put 10k down still financed 30k and didn’t need a truck and don’t like it. I completely agree with you, young and dumb. Either drive for a while or get rid of it and deal with the repercussions of a very poor decision. Lesson learned.

Do some research and post it on FB marketplace and you may be surprised. I’d list it $1500 under what dealers are selling similar trucks for. Lo mile Tacoma’s sell well. Most people can still get low loan rates on a 1 year old truck. Also trading it in may be doable as well. You can prob add 1k to trade price based on tax savings for your state (?). Your new vehicle taxable value will be reduced by amount given for trade in. So at end of day you may just be worried about 1k dealing with private party and liability issues if they wreck vehicle before getting it insured and if they run your toll tag bill up with your plates (get them off) and stuff like that.

People that say stuff like this are the ones that spend the rest of their life broke making payments on shit. They don't value the time they spent earning that money. That time is your life. When bad times come as the sometimes do most of these people are not remotely prepared.

Everything is relative. I bought a commercial office building in 2007 (peak of market) for $2.5M. Taking a $3k to $4k hit doesn’t sound too bad... but my advice (take it or leave it) stands; buy a cheap reliable driver and enjoy the truck for a while. I have a 2019 auto and it is fine. I also have an inexpensive manual sports car for fun. Cheap doesn’t mean it isn’t fun. Shop around.

Haha what an assumption to make. You must be an economical social media professional.
I 100% would bet I am way more financially stable than a lot of people out there.

it’s not about the money. It’s about your happiness.

generally people who bash on other people for Spending THEIR OWN money ... are broke.
( see I sound like an asshat)

Keep it and drive it ... you will learn to like the automatic and make better decisions ... and you will have a dependable vehicle that does everything.

Have you started using it for those weekend adventures? I would do a few of those before giving up on the truck. You're going to take a loss if you sell and theres no guarantee you'll end up in the right vehicle(s) the next go around.

It's a long shot but I bet there is a person out there somewhere who just purchased a new Tacoma with a manual transmission and hates the manual or his wife can't drive it and is having the same buyers remorse and wishes he went with an automatic. Why not advertise it out there for a straight across swap. It will be tricky and will obviously involve your finance company to approve. It could solve two peoples problems. Ask your salesman if he/she knows of anybody in your area.

Randomly read this thread because I'm in the market for a 3rd gen. Saw this post and love it. "Enjoy the ride brotha." Truer words...

@J_Anthony_ I also am a person who is fiscally smart (it's one of the reasons I own a Taco - "resale") and so long as you're living within your means, I can't agree with this post more.

OP, by asking the questions you're asking, you already understand the economics a play. These trucks hold their value well, so don't freak out. If the truck brings you happiness because you enjoy how it enriches your life, don't underestimate the other value it might be bringing you in other ways. If it's a mental hurdle that keeps you away at night, get rid of it.

These trucks feed a hobby. People with hobbies keep their brain engaged and more active than those without a hobby. It's why you'll find Nobel Laureates all have a significant thing in common - hobbies outside of their profession. It's not to say that a hobby gives you a ticket to wipe out your life savings and be an @$$hat with your wallet, but man, you gotta live a little while you're lucky enough to be breathing air!
