I think it's the car manufacturer marketing.

We have such good engines, and use such good oil, that you require half the oil changes.

There is no vested interest for Toyota (engine warranty) or the oil sellers (sell less oil) to come up with an interval that is less than ideal.

THE TRUTH: 10K is the ideal interval to change your oil under normal driving conditions

ALSO THE TRUTH: TW members love thinking about oil, tinkering with their trucks, and showing their Taco they love it. 80% of Tacoma members wish Toyota recommended 5k oil changes so they could change the oil at 2.5k and feel like a fuckin champ.

Or we could use common sense to agree with Wikipedia. I'd love to know how else you test an engine designed for space on the ground, without using a vacuum?

Buy into what you want, but the proof is in the results. Lots of people with 400,000 miles on engines with 10K oil change intervals and there is at least one engine that had a documented 880,000 miles before it was replaced with 10K oil change intervals. And that engine wasn't worn out. It just needed a head gasket and rather than repairing it they replaced it.

With synthetic 10K is being conservative and the test results prove it. You could probably go to at least 15,000.

I miss the days when engines burned and dripped so much oil you just tossed a fresh bottle in every month and only ever changed the filter.

If someone posted the recipe for a perfect brisket, half the room would claim that the cook temperature is way too high, while the other half will claim it's too low. All of them will think the plain salt rub is basic bitch and swear that their secret herb medley deserves a Michelin star. At the end of the day all you have is a bunch of arm-waving conjecture and a room full of mediocre brisket.

It doesn't matter what the topic is, really. The very core truth of human nature is we gotta tinker with shit that's beyond our understanding. We just can't help ourselves.

That said, my secret blend of 0-20, RednTacky, with a single drop of seafoam and vinegar allows me to tow a trailer 15k without a single change. Adds a pleasant aroma too.

Wikipedia has strict QA, CM and version management.

Feel free to write something and watch how quickly it’s deleted. There are holes but they are found and fixed.

It’s funny how quickly people dismiss Wikipedia but then go on to cite some blog or random article with no backing either.
