Frame preservation

Hello fellow new englander,

Just wondering if anybody has ever had their frame coated/sprayed/oiled in an attempt to help reduce the amount of corrosion that takes place with all the salt, snow and sand that we have to deal with.

Any feedback would be great.

Nothing maintains a vehicle like maintenance.

Some people argue that it shouldn't be necessary (and they're not necessarily wrong), but the more you put into it, the longer it'll last. Once a year I crawl under my truck with a can of Rustoleum and a wire brush/coarse grit sandpaper. Granted I live in the South and we don't have nearly the road salt you northerner's do, but the touch up session takes a half-hour at most and is worth the time. Truck still looks new underneath.

 

Used Diesel Oil soaks in very well and protects.

 

Seriously? I've got to admit, I've never heard of that... Also, OP, there's a thread on undercoating that was just started from another new englander.

 

I get my rig sprayed with oil back home in VT. Being new to me I should probably do it a 2nd time before winter just to get a good coat under there but I've got friends who've done it for years, their cars look like new underneath that oil. It does work so long as you do it every year.

 

On my '99 I had the frame recoated every year. Ironically the frame still failed but now I have the '10 thanks to the buyback. Getting this frame coated is definitely on my "to-do" list.
