building an ar 15

Im looking into building an ar 15 and im on deployment right now so im looking to get started on ordering what parts i can and have shiped to my parents so if any of you can give me a complet parts list that would be great. also is there a diff between striped lower receivers?

 

Umm...you're in the armed services and you don't know what makes up a complete M4/M16/AR15?

Maybe you should talk with the armory and see if they can give you some training on how to assemble and what parts are needed?

Not trying to be an ass or anything, but I would have thought this would be standard information you needed to know in a combat zone?

You need to order a lower from a FFL dealer, and make sure all your shit cheaks out. Other than that, you can order all the other parts you need (aka upper/barrel and clip).

 

the only part you have to get from a dealer is the lower reciever. the rest can be bought online and shipped to your house.

Most stripped lower recievers are the same. I don't know if you can get a lower until you get back as they have to do a background check on you but everything else (lower parts kit, stock assembly, upper and iron sights) can all be sent to your parents house.

He's a Navy electrician; not sure how much trigger time he gets...

I was in the air force for 4 years. I got to shoot an M16 twice...

I work with an ex army guy that was a combat engineer and he was blown away when I told him I only shot 2 times while I was in...

It all comes down to your branch of service, more importantly your MOS, AFSC, ect..

 

Yeah the only trigger time that i got was when i was stationed in japan and was standing security watch's with the base police and that was once a month. only shot the m16 once though. although i did put about 400 rounds down range. sadly the gun jamed on me durning the actual qual course and i missed expert by 9 points and lost 3 rounds. then the rest of the day we spent on full auto and not one jam. the rest of my time in the navy ive spent working on the sh60b. Yeah i did figure that the lower needed to go through an ffl.

Yeah although im not done yet. have a year and ahalf on my navy contract then im going to the army. im trying to get my warrant officer package together so i can go fly other wise im going over as an mp.

 

your right, I spent my time assembling guided missles, 2k lb bombs, and 20mm

Even civilian Colt LE6920s are not mil spec...

 

yeah thats why the one thing i want to do is eathier get a piston upper or get a piston converson kit.

While true in many situations, for your standard shooter this isn't the case. Unless you have a SBR, suppressor, or full-auto you wont really notice many benefits from the piston upper. However, you will spend a lot more, you will be limited to the unique parts in the action(pray they don't stop making them, or "update" the action), and you end up with a heavier rifle with more complex parts.

I am all about buying the best, and have explored piston rifles many times. At this point though, unless you are in the small minority I previously mentioned that will benefit greatly from it, you will be better served with a good DI build, and use the left over money to buy ammo and range time.

I under stand that for most the di system will be fine but ive had bad experiences with the di system. the weight thatll be added with the piston to me will be worth it. I like the reliability and the fact that its a cleaner system. and the hole mil-spec thing about rifles id give two shits about. you understand just as well as i do how the military purchases its parts for anything and everything. it all goes to the lowest bidder and 9 times out of ten the civilian version is far superior.
