I am considering taking out the OEM head unit and replace with aftermarket unit so that I can get car play. Anyone here have success? I tried searing this forum for "car play" but didn't get many hits. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Image for visibility [IMG]

A lot of people have. A lot have had good results including stock head functions and upgrade in audio output power

Tons of people have. You can get the high end alpine or sears Dasaita or Siecene android units. A ton have swapped for those. I have a Dasaita after upgrading to an OEM NAV unit. Has some glitches but I rock wireless CarPlay on it.

Why not, I poked fun at the OP. I did not call him names or anything rude.

I put in a pioneer unit and I love it. So much better than the shock Toyota system.

Great, any specific pioneer unit that you put in? Any guides you followed?

I suppose someone has to be “that guy”, or take that first bullet. And better him then us right? Or at least this time, is my thinking. :D

That said, it’s usually polite to wait until the OP question has a satisfactory answer from a brah, then we can pop open a cold one for a job well done and chill

Any of the mid level or higher systems are good. Just make sure you get the capacitive touch screen as it’s better. If you don’t want to do your own wiring, you can order from crutchfield and they’ll assemble it for you so it’s plug and play. I did it all myself so if you have questions PM me.

You did this yourself? Been reading up on it since I saw the video of it being installed and working and really like the look and it’s functions. Apple car play is the main reason I want to make a change. If mine had it I’d be satisfied.

Anyway what’s your take on the new unit? Ease of installation and fitment, everything fully compatible with the truck and it’s normal functions, estimated total cost? Thanks

I like the look of OEM so I just went with the BeatSonic Carplay module that plugged straight into my OEM headunit and now I have CarPlay.

I installed it on 9/16 and wouldn't go back. Keep in mind, it retains all look and functionality of of OEM headunit, so it's not going to make audio sound better, but I didn't want an external mic (like many aftermarket HUs). The resolution may not be as great as an aftermarket, but it's clear enough for what I need. Install is super-easy as it's all plug and play. It's a passthrough unit, so just connect a few harnesses.

You say resolution may not be great, as in hard to see while driving using Apple Maps? I too don’t care about audio being any better than it already is with the jbl system that sounds perfectly fine to me on channel 61 :)

I mounted my mic at the top of my A pillar. I don’t even notice it now. I also installed a ton of sound deadening, a 5 channel amp and a sub. Totally worth the effort.

The resolution is fine and you can make out street names and see everything you need to see. It's just not as good as aftermarket HUs because you're limited by the resolution of the OEM screen. It's like seeing something in 720p when you could be seeing it in 1080p or 4K. It's not terrible, but you know it could be better.
