Note that the factory oil change recommendation is a MAXIMUM (10k miles) not a minimum. The oil may still be good, but I wouldn't consider constantly revving the engine to the max rev line either ...

“Oil needs to be changed because it gets contaminated with combustion by-products that accumulate at about the same rate regardless of oil type”

Please note; “regardless of oil type”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil

    Oil Engineering Explained

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=Se8-W7rK0H4&feature=emb_logo

    Shell research engineer Shana Simmons:
:44 Why should I change my oil:
“as an engine burns fuel, it deteriorates the motor oil. Changing you oil helps to remove harmful contaminants and it replenishes the additives that have been depleted”.

2:43 - What is sludge and what causes it.
“Every-time your engine is running, byproducts from combustion build up and contaminate the motor oil. If contaminants build up inside your engine they can settle out and form sludge.
Using low-quality motor oil, neglecting to change your oil and maintenance issues can all lead to sludge forming”.

Your money, your truck, your choice

    Hope that helps

Love the 10K oil change intervals on my Tacoma. Even if the oil and filter are recycled (are they?) a 5K oil change feels like a waste of resource and money. Now the intervals on my 03 Acura RSX, which burns a quart every 1500 miles, are more interesting.

Yeah, but how do you know 5000 miles is the magic number? Why not change it every 2000 miles, or every 7000 miles?

Just to be safe I change my oil every mile. Sure it takes longer to get somewhere, but oil is cheap and engines are not

I get it, I agree neither Wikipedia or youtube should be used as a complete knowledge reliable source, I know I don’t. That does not mean everything in it is inaccurate, because that would be false. It is instead a quick study guide to be used towards further research.

Now lets move on to oil sludge, its origins or beginnings.

Without going into tons of research and verification material which you can dive into, it is widely accepted that it is a by-product of combustion that is always occurring anytime your engine is idling or working.
It ought to therefore be a logical conclusion that it needs to be collected and removed from the engine, preferably before it has time to settle or dig into your engine.

Once it is settled in there, the motor oil can no longer remove it.

Moreover, now when you take and drain that oil and send it to the lab, it will show clean!
But that’s only because it can no longer remove the sludge. You have to open the valve covers get a putty knife and clean out all the oil return passages and PCV system. Does that sound logical or make any sense?
Now we see why we can’t go by anything someone tells you is fine on any kind of forum.

And BTW, good luck with the bill!

There is a reason auto makers give a MAXIMUM time or mileage they are wiling to accept and still validate your engine warranty. I don’t want to push that limit any more than I want to constantly push the max rpm redline on the engine.

But that’s just me. Your money, your vehicle, your choice

But I do sincerely hope that helps understand the need to do oil changes.

    Cheers!

What do you recommend to us for our 2GR FKS engines? Give us a number so we can avoid sludge. I clearly cannot trust Toyota to advise.

You can trust TOYOTA advice. They put MAXIMUM(s) allowance on their maintenance schedule and warnings before you exceed them. It is up to you if you wish to continually push the limits.

But I can’t accurately give you the perfect maintenance schedule because everyone uses or operates their vehicles in a different matter, different tasks, environments and many other variables.
I do know that in our fleet comprised of give or take 3800 pieces of rolling equipment of all kinds, we had to replace a ton of camshafts and other internal engine components before we settled on a three month 5k mile service interval.

That said, we also had a good number that went into happy semi retirement at the hands of new owners at the auction. Go figure!
But now that’s a thing of the past (engine damage), and we only have to deal we all the other million things that can go wrong.

I’ll let you guess what schedule I follow with all my personal vehicles based on what I have seen for myself.

    Hope that helps

    Cheers

    I want a number. 5000? 2500? 7800?

you’ve posted all these wiki articles and written all these words. How do I know when?

I think it's funny everyone is talking mileage but not procedure. You take it to the dealer and they let your truck sit and cool down and put the drain plug back in while it's still draining out.

It has been said on the forum we can’t trust Wikipedia or YouTube information, let alone me, so there’s that.

But you can trust the factory MAXIMUM recommended number(s) 10k miles for oil changes, 6400lbs for daily towing, and so on.
These numbers are safe for you. I’m sure there are people who go well past those recommendation and their vehicles haven’t exploded. Got to love TOYOTA, it’s build tough.

    Good luck my friend

I have my own theory on that, but it’s not supported by Wikipedia or YouTube so I can’t use it here.

    Cheers

Ok, 10K it is, as per Toyota’s recommendation.
