    I can’t decide which amp and pair of 10 inch subwoofers are best for my truck. Any suggestions??

    The box I have is made for two 10’s, so I thought I would stick with it. My uncle gave me a Quantum QXA1100M Mono QXA Amplifier and two MTX Audio Speakers. They are both pretty old and the amp overheated just about every time I played music. I don’t want to spend any more than $500 for the amp/subwoofers.

    What caused the amp to overheat? Low voltage, running the amp with lower than rated speaker load.
    If the wire feeding the amp isn't big enough, you could be experiencing a voltage drop as you crank it up. And the ground wire, how is it attached to the truck? Clean metal to metal is best. Use a nut and bolt, not self drilling screws.

    Optimally, assuming this is a sealed box, you should figure out how much airspace the box has and pick subs that are designed for that amount of airspace.

    Then select an amp with at least the amount of RMS power required to run both subs

    The amp will dictate your wiring/electrical needs. Big 3 is recommended in any install.

    Also recommend you learn, or find someone that knows how to properly set up an amp. I don’t mean fiddle with the knobs “till it’s loud”. More installs have sounded like ass because someone treated the Gain knob like a volume knob.

    If you’re not willing to learn the proper way to do all of this, I recommend hiring the install out. Otherwise, find your local car audio community and make some friends.

    I’ll answer whatever I can, just don’t know your level of knowledge and interest. I did my first install twenty years ago and learned a lot from others along the way.

    I think the speakers were causing it to overheat. We changed the ground wire, so I don’t think it’s the problem. A few people I’ve talked to in the past few weeks said the speakers are the problem.

    What is the impedance of those speakers? Have you measured the resistance of those voice coils? They should be close to the rated impedance. You do not want to load an amp with a lower than it's minimum rated impedance. Not only will it overheat, you stand a good chance of burning up output transistors.

    Installation won’t be a problem. I have some time out of school here soon so I can take the speakers out and measure the space inside the box. The biggest thing for me is determining how much power I need to power two 10’s. I understand it varies based on the subwoofers.

    Power requirements are simple. Find the RMS rating of your subs. You need at least that much power from your amp. Some subs will take a bit more, depends on the sub. Too small of an amp won’t run them at full potential. Too much will shorten the life of the subs.

    Improper gain adjustment and clipping will kill them quickly.
