    Since we're talking ancestry here...

My parents met at Maxwell Field (now Maxwell AFB) near Montgomery, Alabama during WW2.
He was undergoing pilot training (B-24 bomber).
    She was a secretary.
    Blind date.

    Father's side:

Pennsylvania Dutch all the way. German peasant farmers.
(Though one got venturesome and married an Irish gal 150 years ago).
Peter Der Alte (Peter the Old) came over in 1763, the year the French and Indian War ended.
He went straight to the Laurel Highlands on the frontier. (Somerset County).
The family farm is within sight of Mt Davis, highest point in PA.
It was in the direct line for 202 years until my Father handed it over to a cousin in 1965.

    Mother's side:

    Scottish. This is more complicated.

Granddaddy was Gunn Clan, from the northernmost tip of Scotland. Highland Scot.
Gunn was originally Gunnar (or Gunni). Vikings who quickly intermarried and became Scots.
They had a 500 plus year feud with the Keith Clan. (A story in itself, full of murder and mayhem).
The coat of arms has a viking longship and a muzzled bear.
The Bear was the totem of the Keith Clan.
The Gunns finally lost that feud and got scattered hither and yon.
Though there are still some in the Highlands.
Many made their way to America in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Grandma was a Jack. Lowland Scot.
The name comes from Norman French (Jacques).
Apparently a Norman knight acquired land somehow in Lowland Scotland.
    Almost certainly stolen land. :p
Evidently he and his descendants prospered.
Because there are many Jacks (and Jacksons) in the South.

My father's side has a long genealogy that has everybody in it.
Some great great uncle thought it was worth doing.
Yes, an actual book. Totally boring.
The most recent update even has my sister and myself in it.

For my mother's side, it comes from stuff my sister collected when she visited Scotland.
My sister was in the Air Force (now retired) and at one time was stationed at Bentwaters RAF base in England.
She spent one whole 30 day leave in Scotland.

Yes! Thanks for asking! Entering one of our busier times at work so a little crazy. Overall I have no complaints!
