you can find remans for $65 or so. I thought I had some linked. Centric remans were what I used.

Just did my brakes on my 05 Taco so you do not need wheel spacers. And the link is what I order from EBay, comes with everything!! You only need to order dust shield (hassle of hammering things to fit) and *optional* brake tubes. That’s it.

 

I like the stock look but in the future maybe upgrade rims.

Can confirm these fit black rhino armory 17" wheels with extra room. I did notice I had TONS more control of braking while off roading on steep decline. They gripped well and I could decend in a much more controlled manor. I have not had the opportunity to really get on them at highway speeds but I'm sure there is some gain there too. Very impressed with this so far! Also very lucky I did this with shields because turns out my passenger front wheel bearing was SHOT!!!! go figured the dealership I bought it front left off the oring that goes between the hub assembly and knuckle so it allowed alot of water in there. Why I never trust anyone to touch my stuff and do ALL my own repairs. I had them do it when I bought this truck though since it was under their warranty. Bent the shit out of my pry bar trying to busy loose that axle nut. Good thing snap on has a lifetime warranty lol didn't know you could bend them that much!

 

Just waiting on my helper to get home so I can bleed them. It’s convenient that my fiancé drives a 5th gen 4Runner and happened to be needing brakes. So I stole her old rotors, had em turned and am out the door on this for less than $200. Also, if anyone has a good pair of tin snips and wants to save a couple bucks, you can trim the Tacoma dust shield and keep it 90% effective.



Hopefully bedding in pads within the hour and can report back with results.

 

First impression is the braking power is definitely improved, but the pedal feels softer. I am pretty confident with my bleed job so I’m attributing it to either the pads still getting bedded in, or the slightly larger pistons requiring that little extra pedal movement to move the extra fluid. I’ll see how things feel in the morning after brakes cool from the bedding process.

I had to bleed mine 3 times I believe you get them back to normal. Still a little more travel than before but damn the amount of control off road is bad ass!!!! I can roll off steep ledges so easily now it's insane. I really want to get to the 80-85mph range and just get my foot into it and see how they do ahahha also want to get my two friends (ones a bike stock taco and the other is a lifted on 33s with stock brakes) and we all run at 60mph and see who stops first test.

 

What is the general consensus on doing a brake upgrade and leaving the dust shields off? I know they come that way OEM. I know there is some rotor protection that can come from a dust shield, specifically,,, dust. But it doesn't block any water, won't block any substantial mud, nor does it need to. Some claim cooling of rotor is improved with a dust shield but I cannot convince myself that airflow in the center of the rotor and out radially could be improved with a shield in place. inspection of both rotor surfaces, junk getting trapped, and an escape route for brake dust and better cooling due to more airflow are all potential benefits of leaving the shields off.

I am sure there are lots of people who have left them off, but would like to know the brake guru's thoughts from this thread.

FYI, I will be doing a brake updgrade, just not sure if I will use replacement calipers or the fancy Wilwood ones. My truck is heavvvvvy and braking sucks currently. Gotta make some decisions on wheels/tires so I can get the 16s off and make room for brakes.

Lots of people leave them off with no issues. My concern for someone that does some significant off roading is tearing the outer cv boot and getting grease on the pads. I’ve torn bolts several times and that’s the one reason why I have at least some or the dust shield still in tact.

FWIW, my brake pedal feel went back to stock (or even slightly better) after I installed speed bleeders all around and bled the brakes manually a third time. Even with a vacuum bleeder, we clearly weren’t getting all the air out of the lines until the speed bleeders went in.

And based on some of the other responses I’ve seen, I’d imagine adjusting my rear drums would likely firm the pedal up or bring the engagement point up a bit as well. But with that said, I can’t comment on a master cylinder upgrade. I’m more than satisfied with my brake pedal feel and the performance of this upgrade right now so I’m in no hurry to mess with it again.
