Looking at Bilstein 6112/5160, anything else I should consider at this price point?

Like the title says I'm looking at getting some bilstein 6112/5160's from @HeadStrong Off-Road. Are there any other kits I should look at in the same price range?

Hey to be honest, this is the one i got with the headstrong progressive 3-leaf AAL. i also added the SPC UCAs. I feel like I got the best deal since i'm not looking into tuning my suspension system and from what i researched i read multiple times that it tends to be the best at resisting rust. You can consider for the price however the Stage 2 Fox system. What is going to determine how close to price you'll be when picking one over the other comes down to what other parts are you buying. If you are only going for 2 inches of lift you can get away with no UCAs. So the Fox coil-over becomes a good option. If your like me and wanted the UCAs for the adjustable castor, angles, etc. than maybe the Bilstein is the way to go.

Now also to be 100% there are a lot of guys on this forum who are being sincere, but are very wrong at what they will tell you. For example a spacer lift(with-in) reason will not damage your truck. A lot of those same people who criticize spacer lifts will spend almost $10K in suspension upgrades and then see a dirt road every now and then and will most likely never do any "rough" off-roading. Some of those guys actually off-road quite seriously, but have bought into the marketing.

You need to determine what you want from your truck. but for that price, and roughly what it will provide your truck consider these options:

interestingly enough the New Rough country stuff is actually quite good in my opinion. Have a buddy with the new Kits from rough country and i was quite impressed for the price.

Anyways. If it means anything the Kit you are looking at is essentially the Non-TRD, but still the same TRD PRO suspension of the the Second Gen Tacoma.

I have that setup with ome Dakar springs on the back. I like it other than the noisy springs. I've been on several of "roads"in SW Colorado at low speed and a good bit of big bend national Park trails at less than low speed. Even though Im pretty sure I was getting air at big bend the truck still rode great.

 

Thanks for the info, I don't plan on lifting the rear and will have the fronts set for only ~.5 inches of lift. I'm really looking for a better ride off road, not too concerned about the lift.

 

I only did a small lift which was mostly negated by additional weight on the truck. I wanted to keep the take on the truck so when my bike is in the bed it wouldn't sit nose up.

 

I thought the truck wallowed in the turns with the stock 2nd gen suspension. The 6112’s w 600lb springs helped in the turns considerably. However, I normally carry ~400 lbs of armor and stuff. I don’t think you will be disappointed with the 6112’s.

Originally when I went to the 6112 I found it was much smoother on and offroad. Now I’m wanting something even more smooth after reading someone who has Kings on one Tacoma and 6112 on the other Tacoma. He was saying Kings are much smoother.

 

I thought about it but I can't justify the cost of the kings for my needs at this point. Glad to hear the 6112's are smoother. The stock SR5 suspension is somewhat jarring for people in the back seat.

 

I have my eyes on the Bilstein 6112/5160 kit as well, primarily to tighten up the on-road ride. I tow 3000 lbs regularly and would probably raise the front no more than 0.5".

 

I initially was going to get the 6112/5160s but they were sold out for a long time. I decided to get icons instead because they're not much more, have better adjustability and are rebuildable.

 

Just bought the following from Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road, picked up past Saturday:

-COIL/BILSTEIN 5100 KIT W/ DAKARS (HS16BK-1-DAKAR) but instead of 5100s for the front, customized it with 6112 (6/5 notch)
-OME Dakar HD leaf pack (constant 400lb load on my bed)
-SPC UCAs
-Awaiting on clamshell bearing from ECGS (arriving Friday)
-Reason for 6112 (more height settings than 5100)

Marie was super helpful, patient, and didn't try to sell me a bunch of hardware I don't need.

I'm installing it this Friday/Saturday. Will keep everyone posted.

 

6112 FTW. Had them for about 1 year. Amazing on and off road. Set mine at 6/5.
The rear I went extended 5100, 5160 was backordered. 5100 are a nice improvement over stock, really cost effective.

 

Installing mine this weekend, how much lift height did you get after settling? Any aftermarket hardware on the front?

May need sway bar relocate kit. Helps with rubbing. It’s simple enough to install after the main lift so it doesn’t need to be installed with The new coilovers.

 

No added weight yet. SSO front slim bumper is on the way, I might need to up spring rate from 600 to 650.

It settled at 2.5 inches.

Have fun with the ecgs bushing, that's the hardest part of the lift. Critical to replace it though.

I've heard mixed things on the ECGS install, some say it was fairly easy, some say it was a PITA! Guess I'll just have to find out for myself.

 

Might I suggest the Eibach PRO LIFT Kit, I'm sure a lot of resellers will be having some sort of Black Friday deal on them soon. I just recently installed it on my Offroad. Offers an amazing ride, handling is much more firm but not bouncy. It's a great suspension system for what you pay

 

What do people typically run out back with those in the front?

 

Just like other kits, you could pair with any AAL/replacement pack or rear block of your choosing. I know many are running Headstrong AAL/Wheeler's AAL. I'm not running any additional components, no AAL no rear block and it's running great so far.

I'll probably add AAL/replacement pack in the future as I add on armor, etc.
