My grandfather is a gunsmith and I've repaired lots of firearms with him over the years. Done my own bluing and parkerizing, remade parts entirely, refinished stocks... I could see it being a good business, plenty of people have em. But I never really got the point of having any and going shooting was fun but not fun enough to cover the expense.

    I respect that.

Unfortunately, it seems you didn't experience the other end of things.

It's like a person that owns a 4x4 truck, but never takes it off road so he/she just sees it as a truck to carry stuff with, etc.

If you don't try other things, you miss out on all the fun.

    No thanks.

My marines, (crayons included) and I will go fuck shit up, kick doors down, clear a whole building with just a small team, and hog tie bitches up when I find them.

I don't swing both ways, so no navy for me.

Kudos to your grandad. Gunsmiths are a dying breed. Have to deal with a lot of assholes in that industry.

I don't particularly like to kill things and I'm not afraid for my safety, not sure what use I'd have for one. Target shooting is fun here and there, done that while camping with friends, I'm an okay shot even with a handgun. But that's literally all I'd ever want one for, and that's a large expense for just that.

but with a ship you can hunt down other ships, board and clear them
and then hog tie and make them walk the plank!

He's very good at what he does, and boy does he meet some... Interesting people. But yeah, you put up with a lot of flak (pun intended) dealing with folks in that trade.

I've hunted a lot of hogs, with a depredation permit, cause they're very invasive.

Done my fair share of white tail but it's been years.

Other than that, my shooting was strictly long range, in conjunction to reloading.

It's a real thing to be proud of when you go from formulating the 'perfect' recipe, have designated batches of bullets and powders for said recipe, and have brass measured for volume and weighed, for the absolutely most consistent components available.

From there, you combine those items and play with seating depths and measure standard deviations, to see what concoction yields the most consistent results.

At that point, you've attempted to eliminate all other variables and all that's left is skill and experience when you're reading wind, accounting for drop, coriolis effect, and temperatures.

Once that lead connects to that steel at over a mile away, then you can brag.

Theres a select group of gunowners that refuse to work on their own stuff, yet are even more particular than most other gunowners. Those dudes can be real dicks. Blame the gunsmith for everything, including why they cant shoot worth a crap.

Ive only had to take a gun to the smith on 2 occasions. One cause the front sight broke off my old shotgun. Second time I had an old Mauser that had a sewer pipe barrel from never being cleaned right after shooting corrosive ammo. Had to get a new tube screwed on and chambered etc.

Avalon was sold today for 4750. Not bad for a car I put a new engine in, front brakes, resurfaced the rear rotors and frees calipers up, new steering rack and cleaned up really good. Oh and headlight bulb. Total investment of 1300
