Remote start - engine shuts off when opening door

So I may have missed it, but I wanted to make sure I am correct. Even though I have a regular key and not the push start, the truck will turn itself off when I open it?

 

It will stay running.

 

Because I have the basic key? no 15 minute limit or anything?

 

Depends on the brand of remote starter. Most are set at 15min. The truck doesn’t determine if the vehicle shuts down after x minutes.

 

The auto-shut off on the Tacoma is 10 minutes. At least on the 2020.

 

My manual says 15, but I haven't tested it myself.

 

To be fair, I haven’t tested it for that full amount, but the app remote start message you get after starting it specifically states it will shut off in 10 minutes. Perhaps the message is wrong.

 

Your 2020 has remote start on the fob? Just bought a 2020 limited and the fob only has lock, unlock, and alarm.

 

Had a Viper remote start installed on my 2017 Tacoma. As soon as I touch the handle and open door the engine shuts off. Not too big of a deal for me to restart. Every after-market system I looked at did this. Not sure about the ones installed at Toyota dealer...they might not shut off.

 

Minor difference, but my truck shuts off when you unlock but before opening the door.

 

My Honda has a aftermarket viper remote start where it will only quit if you press the break pedal without inserting the key.

With the Viper system on my Tacoma no way the engine will stay running as it shuts off in most cases before I even get into the driver seat. It shuts down before I can touch brake. I think it has something to do with touching door handle and unlocking and opening door. If I touch handle to unlock doors and then open rear door, engine stops.

 

It’s the same behavior on all of them. Unlock or opening the door will shut it off.

Does Toyota have a remote start upgrade for my 2017 keyfob? I'm cool with the engine shutting off when I open the door if I can warm up the car from my couch...lol

12v solutions has a plug and play, looks simple to install

 

Mine usually times out before I get out to it but it’s warm or cooled down. Don’t care I have to restart it
