Barnett is good, tenpoint is also good brand. Parker is good but i think they went out of business. Starter id say $300-400. 150lb draw min. Dont really need to get crazy fps. 285-350 will kill any deer with the right placement out to 40yds.

This bow would be for smaller animals like a blackbuck, maybe deer, although I dont really enjoy white tail hunts

    My two cents.
    Ten point.
    Wicked ridge warrior.
They are fast enough at 320 FPS
    155# draw.
    Narrow cross beam.
    Good basic bow.
    I love mine.

There are faster, narrower, lighter ones. But then the price will climb.
I will say one thing about this bow and lots of others.

You need to shoot it to de-cock the string. There are some that you can do it without shooting it
However I’m not a fan of it. I have a special bolt I made for doing that. No biggie.
    They are not a rifle.
Similar ,,,,but there are things that you really really need to pay attention with.
You hunt like it’s a bow.
For me ,the coolest thing is out white tail hunting ( we can use one during firearm season)
And guys drive by and slam the brakes on and back up and ask
    “ Are you throwing bolts”?
    “ Dude that’s so badass”...

When my wife and I started dating and she got into hunting we went to a friend of ours small bow shop and she told him she wanted the cheapest crossbow she could get. She wound up with a $185 Barnett (complete minus broadheads), 145 lb draw weight with a cheap little red dot scope thing on it. I can't stand it, she loves it. She shot this 10 pt. with it at 15 yards and has killed numerous deer with it.

I bought a nice Carbon Express that cost about 3 times what she paid, same draw weight. Both crossbows shoot the same, about the same noise from both, both kill deer.

There are a lot of good crossbows out there these days and the features are like vehicles, the more you pay the more you get (I paid more and got camo, hers is black) but my wife has proved to me time and time again you can kill deer with the cheapest thing out there, you just got to run one through the animal.

This is the only picture of my crossbow I can find with the 9 pt. We killed these 2 deer out of the same ground blind I made from cedar trees a week apart.

For the record, my wife shot the 10 pt opening week, it was the first time she went hunting that year and didn't go back the rest of the season :D

See, I dont even know if thats a high draw or low draw. Im inferring that "draw" is the tension of the line that move the arrow.

for a crossbow its about average. You can get higher draw but its really overkill IMO. 150lb draw is really a lot for anything under 40yds. Now if you are getting crazy and trying for 80-100yds with a crossbow then thats a different ball game and much more money.

Well, I think Id go for a crossbow that can handle 60yds which is a little more than what my usual kills are. I would probably get a little red dot on it. Im looking at compound bows and they just seem to complicated for what Im trying to achieve honestly.

60yds is fair distance for a crossbow. Not to say they dont or cant reach that but when you are shooting a 20" bolt and the arc of the bolt coupled with the sound it can spook the game before the bolt even gets to the animal. You are going to be looking for a higher draw and priced crossbow.

Then your gonna want a faster bow.
    Up around 400fps.
Then that puts you in a whole new price category.
When they hear that twang any animal is going to flinch and it's going to have to get there fast.

Yerp! Some people feel comfortable 80-100 yards shooting archery, I prefer less than 25 yards. Under 15 is awesome!

Im thinking this may not be my game...atleast not for hunting. Archery is a skill I would like to learn nonetheless.

Anybody can shoot something with a rifle.........killing something with a bow or crossbow at less than 20 yards outweighs shooting a big anything with a rifle.

You want to defy all odds, shoot a big, mature whitetail doe at 10 yards. Hardest thing there is to shoot IMO.

mmm...IDK, the exotic animals that I like to hunt dont even go near blinds, much less 20 yards close. Pretty much all the exotics I have taken are while driving around in a polaris and you typically have 1 second to pick one out then another to aim and shoot. White tails are generally a lot easier, which is why it doesn't intrigue me quite as much as exotics. I thought maybe since white tails usually stay near feeders for 10-15 mins at a time a compound or crossbow would make for a much more exciting and challenging (or atleast technical) hunt, but the tree blinds Ive seen are generally 50-60yds from where the animals typically feed or hang out.

I'm talking about things I can hunt around home, we don't have exotics in N.C. :D
