i have the same problem, but frankly find it hard to find peeps who state they regret much vs pontificate their positives with little knowledge of the other choices.
I have 33s and have landed “inside my head” on likely doing 4.88 as the first (next? Only?) step. But with Magnunson announcing the pending release of their supercharger for our motor I’m going to wait on the regear for now.

I think even with boost, 4.88 or 5.29 is the way to go.

Is it worth several thousand dollars to go from 4.30 to 4.88.

    No. But since I'm getting lockers F and R, it's worth $1200.

I have 4.88's running 285/75r16 I use to have 255/85r16. Great ratio allowing the engine to lug and not have to shift the tranny. If you do a fair amount of interstate driving you rpm's will be screaming. Around town drive ability is awesome.

For an auto you can get away with 5.29 because of the double overdrive. You have a manual which has lower 6th gear and your intended tire is only a 33 so 4.88 will have higher RPM still than an auto with 5.29 gearing. I know someone with 4.88 with a manual on 33s and he says it’s almost too much gearing for a 33”

Indeed. This thread is about MT, hence why it's a bit surprising to me.

I think people are missing that when they vote. 4.88 on my auto with 33s is spot on where the RPMs should be on highway. Very happy

I think this poll should at least separate out or double entry choice for the MT and AT.

    @Pablo8
Since you helped me out earlier today on the oil

Since the MT pushes a higher rpm with stock 4.3 gear ratio than the AT does with 4.88’s (do to the double overdrive in the AT)...based on the math and drive-ability with tires under 35”...depending on tire width/weight of course) 4.88’s with the MT sounds pretty darn ideal.

I run 4.88’s with 32’s in the AT. I can only imagine how awesome the MT would feel without the double overdrive even up to 34” tires

I vote 4.88’s with the MT as long as 34” tires or less

Even though these are AT numbers, it may help to extrapolate these knowing your MT will push higher RPMS. I hope this helps you out in some way

Wow. Good to know, but the MT still pushes higher rpms than the AT. Even Nitro gear mentions in their YouTube videos that the MT pushes high rpms in stock gears compared to the AT with 4.88’s. I still think the 4.88’s are ideal. Nonetheless thank you for this because I was not aware the MT had double overdrive

Op, what are you doing with your truck? Are you just doing city driving, a lot of highway, any hardcore offroading or what's the reason? Just bigger tires? It's hard to say what you need other than to calm a decision on what number to throw on a pickup.

I have a MT but do a lot of highway miles to offroad for a small weekend. The 4.88s with full armor up front, 33s and an empty bed were a God send from stock. I just did 3k miles in the last 5 days to get my drifter and pick up my rear bumper and with the added weight going up mountains and valleys were no issue. In 6th I was slightly annoyed at my rpms and can't imagine how it'd be with 5.29s.

I'd recommend if you're going 35 and up, 5.29 regardless of other weight but do look at how you're going to be using your truck before jumping on a train

    Best of luck!

On and off road. Off road is mud, gravel, loose stuff and snow. No rock climbing stunts, but some rocks on the trail. I don't think I will ever put 35" wheels on this truck, but will go 33 next tires. I think at some point I would go nuts if 6th wound up tooooooo high RPM on the highway.

    4.88's it is.

Have we found anyone with 5.29 on a MT yet?

You won't be disappointed, I went from the same mindset, 4.30 to 4.88, didn't seem like it would be worth it but was convinced once I drove it in real life.

The mountain pass that made me realize I wanted more because I was constantly on 3rd and 4th, now I can climb from 5th and 6th. With my added weight and the mountains I climbed coming back home I can safely assume I'd be in the 4 and 5th gear setting!

There's a few MT with 5.29s but never read anything like what I'm posting now with real life experiences aside praise and wow at the difference.
