Well that and it would have detracted from 4runner sales. I dont see any other ohv capable suv in Fords lineup.

They can't give them away where I'm at. I've seen maybe 3 out in the wild, not including work trucks. However, Tacomas are everywhere, including 5 infernos (the best color, I might add). Haven't been to the dealer, but I'd imagine they're marked down 5k.

Tommy said he liked the Pro better offroad, said he really liked the Pro and would pick the Pro.
Just cause it had its doors blown off in the drag race by the Ranger doesn’t mean they hate the truck.
They pointed out lots of positives for the Tacoma.

same here, very rare to see one on the street and it's like the dealers are hiding them afraid they may cut
    into the F150 sales.

Not this video in particular. But they've posted many Tacoma vs. the Colorado, Ranger, basically every mid-size truck. It's like they take their script from JD Power or Consumer Reports and make these videos. In one, the driver knocked the Tacoma because it slid a little to one side (not off the trail) while overtaking a muddy hill, blaming it on the ill-equipped factory tires, even though he took a questionable line. Don't get me wrong, the ATAs aren't great, but I believe it was the ZR2 vs. a TRD Off-Road video, where the ZR2 has factory Duratracs. Is that a fair comparison in terms of performance? Not necessarily. It's fair in comparing standard equipment, which I get, but it doesn't really paint a fair picture of actual capability. I guess we can blame Toyota for not putting Duratracs on the TRD PRO, which would have made a much better comparison video, but I digress....

    Fair point.

Carrying over from the 2nd gen is not necessarily a bad thing though. That was a proven platform. Also, Toyota's reputation for quality/reliability can pretty much be taken to the bank as their manufacturing processes and quality control are arguably the best in the business. The same can't be said of Ford... they've been all over the map in terms of quality control.

The long-term plan for the 4th gen Tacoma was to combine it with the Tundra platform. It didn't make any sense for them to develop something brand new for one generation. Personally, I wish they would have moved to the global Hilux, but it would be sweet if the twin turbo 3.5 that is planned for the Tundra is available for the Tacoma. It won't happen, but a man can dream. Hell, I'd be stoked with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel.

To each his own. What engine would you use, because we'll likely never see a 4.6L V8 or factory supercharger? Me needs moar power!!!

A 6 cylinder hybrid would be awesome IMO. Keep the 2GR-FKS and add a hybrid system to it. That electric torque combined with better fuel economy, and retaining the gasoline engine for range would be ideal.

Two engine options available... The 3.5 hybrid, and keep the 2.7 4-cylinder to maintain a lower priced alternative for people.

The 2GR hybrid system is proven. It's been done on the Highlander for years now. It's a very reliable setup.

I had a hybrid highlander, the engine went out at 160k. I'm not sure what YOU mean by proven, but I've had first hand experience that they are not.

The current 2GR Hybrid system is transverse mounted and FWD based. So, enjoy your new unibody FWD based Tacoma, an entirely new 2GR Hybrid system would be needed for it to work in the current truck. There's SO much they could do now to increase efficiency as a complete package. Mazda's Skyactiv program is a good example of what can be done yet still remain competitive. A bunch of subtle tweaks and smart engineering.

If dodge can milk a 800 hp on a decade old platform, toyota can stick a 4.0L V8 into a tacoma. But then Tundra sales, already stagnant would suffer more... it will be like should I get a V8 tacoma or if I want full-size, F150/Chevy. I am not sure on the emissions aspect, but the old Lexus/Toyota 1UZ would be plenty powerful and is a tried and true, billion dollar engine that I would love to see in a tacoma... not like my mpg is any better than its 16.

If anyone can do a proper hybrid, it's Toyota. I never said the changes would be minimal to implement it in a Tacoma, and I never said I wanted a transverse unibody setup (hell no to that), but in theory a hybrid Taco is totally doable, and would significantly improve fuel economy which is the holy grail for many automakers these days.

You wouldn't have the range issues of a fullly electric system, and Toyota is good at building hybrids so reliability would likely be excellent.

People dreaming about large displacement V8s and factory superchargers are wasting their time... it will never happen. Its a different world today. Like it or not hybrids, small displacement engines with turbos, and full electrics are the future. I don't want a turbo 4-banger, and I don't want a fully electric Taco (at least not yet), so the best option IMO is a hybrid 6-cylinder.

Hoping for the same V6/hybrid combination. The question is: when? At least a year or two or three after the new Tundra one would assume.

Isn't the Tundra getting a hybrid powertrain in like three months? If so, it would be scalable to a Tacoma.
