Question for all you gents with winches. How have they been holding up in the winter?

I'm just about to buy one but I'm a bit concerned about the salt spray etc.

So, I'm looking at a Warn Evo 10-S and I have this bumper from Lil Bs down in Colorado.

Most winches come with IP68 rating, so it should hold up fine in the winter.
For extra protection you should consider winch cover.
If you plan on having synthetic rope you can either remove it for the winter or loosely roll on the drum. When moisture gets trapped inside of the rope it expands it in the cold creating more pressure against the drum which can cause damage. You also should wash it to avoid having salt get trapped in there.

P.S. VR series is made in china, you can get for 1/2 price smitty.

Thanks man, lots of good info. I didn't know about the VRs being made in China. I'd rather avoid that route personally!

biggest thing with thing to worry about is the solenoid box. Most winches (except for the warn VR) don't come with sealed solenoid boxes.

So big things to look for are:
-sealed solnoid box or a IP rating on the winch and solenoid box. (all winch companies have this on some of their winches...not all)
-Steel or synthetic? if you are planning on going steel and switching to synthetic later on, is the model you are getting comparable to run synthetic down the road?
-Synthetic requires more maintenance....are you aware, and are you willing to do it. OR are you cool with replacing the line more frequently.

    Some things to consider

If you want US made, you'll have to go with Zeon series and they are $$$. I got used one recently for half of the original price, wasn't happy with the design choices warn made... For example bolt heads snapped on me when I tried to remove bracket that holds motor and clutch together...It was a nightmare to fix...:annoyed:

If I had to do it over again, I would go with Red Winches. Much better design and quality.

As for solenoid, you can relocate it behind intake box.

I'll definitely look for the waterproofing and I'm alright with doing the maintenance on the synthetic line.

I don't know that I'm going to use it a lot, but I want it to work when I need it to. My Dad and I have always heard good things about Warn which is why I'm leaning that way.

@Norilsk checked out those Red winches and I thought the Zeons were expensive :eek:they do look really well made though

Most of the bumpers for the tacomas require you to relocate the solenoid box either in the engine bay or on top of the winch....Mines in the engine bay. Been happy with my super winch tiger shark

I have a Smittybilt X20 with solenoid mounted on top and it's mounted onto a Steel bumper so it sees rain/snow/salt. This will be the 3rd winter and it works fine. Running a synthetic line that I try to keep clean after wheeling and winter as well.
