They make money because the prices are high. Why do you think I constantly get 20% coupons. I really only buy from REI at the member garage sales, $150 hiking boots for $50 and they were never used.

Their return policy is probably one of the best, I've seen a RTT get returned just before the 1yr was up. There was anything wrong with it, the person just got a different kind somewhere else.

Exactly. They sell all day long at MSRP prices so they are making plenty of margin across the board to afford a liberal return policy and have room for promotions. We easily forget that's how retail used to work and MSRP is there so that the retailer has a chance to make a profit and keep the doors open. With the low capital needs of online selling now, that whole concept is disrupted.

I just pulled the trigger on a Garmin Explorer+. An upgrade from my Delorme inReach.
Has anyone done the same upgrade?
Does the Delorme case fit around the Garmin Explorer+?
Garmin does not offer a case as an accessory.

Oh, BTW, Garmin has a sale now.

I did that upgrade when the new Explorer+ replaced the Delorme when Garmin bought them. Both were great devices. I just used the Delorme for GPS though. When i was ready to activate it, the new Garmin had just hit the shelves. Then i got the inReach mini at a trade show when it came out and I've never looked back. Sold the Explorer+

And no, the bodies are different so the cases dont work on the Explorer. I recommend getting screen protectors immediately. The body is very tough, but I scratched the screen very easily when it was on my pack strap and I'd set my pack down. Seemed like it always went face-down. The factory screen is soft plastic.

I have the BA HV 2 mountain glow for a few years now. Love it, but kind of want something I can sit up in. I have been stuck in my tent on rainy days before and it doesnt have much room for sitting. but have been debating between the REI Quarter Dome SL2 and the new BA Tiger Wall 2 for a year now. haha How do you like the Quarter dome SL2?

Haven’t even taken it out of the bag yet. I may try to do an overnighter early next week if the weather cooperates. If not then, it will be after Christmas. I’ll let you know.

Which HV do you have? My wife and I picked up the Copper Spur HV UL 2 in the beginning of July. We can both sit up in it without issues. It's a sweet tent.

I always wanted an ArcTeryx down hooded jacket. I tried a nice one on a couple years back but I just couldn’t justify paying what it cost. It was super comfortable and I have to say that I liked it a lot more than the hooded Patagonia down jacket I currently have. Having said that, the Patagonia jacket was a Christmas present from my lady and I was super stoked to get it and really like it!

Anyone here have the Mountain Hardwear Super DS Stretch Down? I been looking at them. I have their Kor Strata and like it, but was looking for something warmer and with a little more stretch for camping/bouldering. Looking for experience in how it performs bouldering. Whether the stretch is enough or if its restrictive, abrasion resistance, and any other input.

MH makes damn good gear but why boulder down? No matter how abrasion resistant that outer layer is you'll shred it on granite. I just put my puffy on between burns to stay warm and take it off for the 24 seconds it takes me to try the problem. lol

I’d be interested in hearing your favorite meals from those of you that backpack. I never find myself very hungry, and as a result I always pack too much food. What’s something that you always pack?

I usually take ramen, but this last trip I just didn’t find it that tasty. Haven’t tried the mashed potatoes yet.
