Agreed, and there should be some sort of “50+” post restriction for new users, and maybe a way to combine threads instead of allowing duplicates to spring up all the time instead of contribute to earlier discussions. Maybe there should be a way to flag newb posts that shouldn’t exist because the forum covered it a hundred times already.

But without that^ being real, let’s be real. Your post above this one is a response to the idea of using a construction cone as a “CAI” (you thought it was funny, and I do too), and the OP (who may very well be a fake/troll account) wants to know about MPGs. So tell us about CAIs and MPGs. I’m actually interested because I get hard for killer fuel economy numbers.

HPS has a tube that gets rid of the resonator but keeps the filter etc. That should make it louder without costing a lot. Or just go to Home Depot and find some various rubber hoses that are large enough to use for the intake.

Anyone ever thought of using a anemometer to measure airflow to see how much Cubic feet per minute (CFM) a CAI can produce over stock airbox

I bet you'll see that a CAI will produce more CFM !!


Also the stock airbox opening is it located in a high pressure or low pressure location ??

Seemed like he was referencing the noise. I dont know about performance but it definitely gives a more aggressive sound at higher RPMS which feeds the thrill. So I understand the sentiment.

 

Yes it's readily testable with a flowbench. However, it makes no difference if the engine can't use the additional flow capacity. The 3.5L needs even less flow than the 4.0L 1GR as long as both are naturally aspirated.

Buy the CAI for the sound (like I did), but don't pretend it gives more power.

Enclosed by the fenderwell plastic? High pressure because air moves slowly there.

See that's one of the reasons I got a Volant intake, so I can impress the mall crowds with the red cone filter shown thru the clear airbox lid.

I was given a Spectre intake earlier this year. I got almost through the install before I stopped and boxed it back up. It was absolute trash. The heat shield didn't fit around the body, there was incomplete gasketing for the shield, and the tube had horrific welds (complete with MIG dingleberries) that had to be filed to fit right.

I expect that intake air temps would have been higher with that than stock, since stock pulls from the wheel well, and the Spectre filter sat unsealed in the engine compartment.

 

Buy a drop in aFe pro dry filter for your stock intake.

cold air intakes do nothing in Tacoma’s but give you a throatier sound, as we already have cold air intakes. Stay away from K&N and any other company that oil their filters. Oil grabs dirt and decreases air flow.

 

Wasn't there a thread about a year ago about an AFE dry filter that was flawed and took out an engine? I think it was a batch issue, but . . .

 

Meh I kinda like the look of the TRD intake but I don't like it 350 dollars worth.

About the only thing that will give you any real gains will be a 91+ tune or a blower.

 

not sure about aFe specifically, I know K&Ns are proven to damage engines with their filter oil. I don’t think aFe is flawless, but it is sure better than others. No product is perfect.

Keep in mind it may have been hyped up that it was the filter that killed the engine if it was a dealership that said such. Dealers are the first to blame any aftermarket product. They’ll say your lift kit caused issues a wheel bearing or with other unrelated parts. All while a chunk of the trucks on the lots are sold with lift “off-road” third party packages. They’re notorious for shifting blame.

I have used K&Ns for a couple decades now on turbo cars with heated AMMs and motorcycles. I agree that the oil can foul AMMs, but using some care after oiling has shown this to be no problem for me. The improved airflow over stock paper filters noticeably helps spool up.

I'm sticking with paper on the Taco since it is NA and the box / filter is quite large. I did grab an HPS tube because the resonator hurt my brain.


Sorry, but I am a being a bit lazy and not searching out that thread. I believe AFE acknowledged the issue but said they were only responsible for the cost of the filter? Just for me, I would not trust a dry high flow element. Oiled, pleated cotton or oiled foam gives me security.

 

I could be wrong, but I believe the Tundra 5.7l airbox is the same as ours? That was another reason that I didn't mess with it like I normally would.
