a bad chip in the paint

When i was detailing my truck today (looks awesome and im not even done:started at 9:30 this morning) and I noticed a chip in the roof and paint and it has rusted... Would wax keep the rust from spreading? but i think its too late for that (dumb question)

 

wax wont help it. you need to stop the rust. tape it off and do a bit of rustoleum paint. glad its on the roof so you wont see it..

 

I would remove the rust first, either by sanding or with naval jelly or the like. If you haven't sanded it smooth do so. Then tape off and spray some automotive primer on the sanded area. Get your paint code (usually located on the front fender) and order a pint of matching paint from the local dealer. Even if you have to brush it on it will look better than just plain primer. If you can get a spray gun to put the paint on it will look even better. Then get a spray can of clear coat and do two coats over an area a little larger than the treated area to tie it in.

 

Just take it to a local auto body shop and get an estimate on having it done right! Remember, besides your house, your truck is probably the next biggest investment you have made so I would take care of it and have the work done the right way if it were my truck! I plan on keeping mine...actually my wife said I was not getting another new truck anytime soon

 

You know.. there was this product i saw the other day.. It’s basically a spray can but you can take it apart and add in any paint you want into it. That would be ideal! It had two cans, one with the air pressure in it, and one you screw in the paint. Then the two cans connect together and you just use it like a spray paint can. The spray nozzle is supposed to be better than a regular can too. Try some searches at automotive painter supplies. I bet they'll know what I’m talking about

Ill try that but that sounds like a BIG job just for a chip that is about the size of a standard nail head

got one of them on my old truck i just noticed on the roof

got the toyota touch up stick with built in sander, maybe it works as intended

 

Find an old pencil with the pink eraser on the end...go at it with the pink end....clean with alcohol or acetone.... Then apply touch-up paint...two to three coats.

 

Just got done touching up a handful of these a few weeks back. I'd say these are a little more reasonable approaches versus some of the others recommended earlier in the thread, especially being on the roof.

 

I remember reading that airbrushes work amazing at touching up chips. That was back in 2010. I don't know how much merit there is to that, however, given that air brushes have a very soft spray, I would say it would be an avenue worth investigating. I will probably have to look into this soon myself actually.

 

I think a lot of it boils down to what the owner's end goal is, but at the very least, and especially being on a body panel, the rust needs to be removed and hit with a primer/paint touch up pen. But if they're wanting a higher quality blend job they'll be looking at more time and/or money.

 

From what I remember the name of the game was sand down smooth to where the step between the paint and the chip no longer exists, airbrush the affected area and it turned out looking like it never even happened.

Part of me actually believes that is a feasible thing. The other part of me has more questions than what can be totally answered.

 

The white trucks I've owned in the past are easier to get good touch-up results on than darker colors. Doing anything here goes a long way from protecting the body from rust and further damage.
