Upgrading the battery

Same exact battery and PN as my now spare '18.

I needed more CCA than the EOM battery because of the Zeon 10 winch. I went with the Exide Edge 24 Marine Dual Purpose AGM FP-AGM24DPDS with 775 CCA Non-spillable, AGM deep cycle. In my 2019 The OE leads easily move to the front side of the size 24 battery. I put an 1/8" shim on the bracket for a snugger fit and sheath over the Neg lead for protection. It has the exact same footprint as the EO battery. I bought it at Home Depot with free delivery. I installed it a few hours ago. and rugged ready.

I'll have to check but I think my Costco Interstate is 700 amps at 0F. Stock battery in my 16 was fine too just replaced it because batteries always seem to be fine until they're not fine.

 

Opinions on odyssey batteries? I used to run a yellow top and lasted for years on my other vehicle. Been looking into the odyssey batteries based on everyone’s reviews!

 

I fell just short of 11 years out of my last Odyssey.

 

11 years? I’d call that a win! On my last Toyota, the battery died after like 2 years. That’s when I swapped it for the yellow top.

 

I know squadooch (sp) about batteries! Only checked the stock battery in my 2017 SR5 for a winch add on down the road.

I found that its rating was only 634 CCA, minimum recommended CCA for winching is 650, I believe? Went with the Optima Red Top group size 35. It’s CCA rating is 720 and CA rating was over 900, only weighed 31lbs. So, i’m thinking a dual side by side setup of red tops would be a good choice or a yellow top for winching and a red for the truck. Have a stock 130 amp alternator being equipted with the tow package so don’t think I’ll have to upgrade that. For right now the single red top has been worry free. Got mine on sale for $178+$18 core fee, delivered from O’Reilly Auto Parts back in August.

 

I'm leaning towards Odyssey myself. They list the same battery for both 2nd and 3rd gens, even though they show a different group number between the two (27F vs 24F). Their extreme series battery weighs 49.5 lbs and is 10.86 x 6.77 x 7.88 and its CCA is 850 which is not bad at all. The only thing I can't confirm is if our alternators are capable of charging it. Optima lists their recommended charging stats, but not Odyssey. I will probably give them a call to confirm and then report back.

 

All this talk and no links. Where can we get a 2nd gen battery tray if those fit 27F batteries?

Is the dealer the recommend place to get a tray or are there any cheap aftermarket alternatives? I'd like a 27F but not if I have to spend $100+ on a new stupid tray, lol.

AGM Northstar is what I'm looking at, but others have stated that specific battery does not fit in our stock tray.

 

I plan on modifying my stock tray if the Odyssey I'm looking at doesn't fit, as it might based on the dimensions. There's all kinds of good info in this thread about the Northstar you're looking at. Be aware that our stock alternators are not capable of fully charging that battery, and the workaround listed in that thread doesn't work for our 3rd gens. So you'll need to buy a 120v wall charger to occasionally top the battery off.

Same here. That battery is clearly the best option, but at the moment I'm not looking to add more complexity to my electrical system.

 

I agree. I want a bit more performance out of my battery but a plug and play solution. Even the 24F AGM Northstar battery would be a good upgrade. I wonder if that one has the same issue with our truck as the 27F...time to browse that thread some more.

 

Yes it would. It's a function of AGM batteries needing a higher charging voltage. Since our truck is calibrated to charge standard lead-acid batteries, the alternator isn't up to the job of charging that AGM. I am in the process of finding out if this is true for all AGM batteries, or if other brands such as Odyssey and Optima are capable of being adequately charged with our truck as it is.

 

Ahh, makes sense. Let me know what you find out as I am curious about that as well. Reading through that thread, it looks like if you do run that Northstar, topping it off once a month with an external charger will suffice. That isn't too bad, but still an inconvenience.
