Pretty sure it's a comment on the general vibe of the vehicle, not a comment directly about it's qtr mile times.

Some of us do not live our lives a quarter mile at a time.

Toyota has not gone downhill. That’s just group think. Sounds clever to write, and might make you feel good about your crappy old 1st gen, but the new trucks are nicer, more reliable, 1000x more capable, and better built then they were. Cars, by all makers, continue to improve. The days of seeing rusty cars, and cars broken down at the side of the highway, or cars with burned out headlights, or oil dripped all over very parking lot, are over.

All cars are better, Toyota included, but that story is no comfort to fellas that can’t afford one, or have loyalty some old junker.

Yeah, you talk about group think and then just regurgitate 3rd gen talking points and superlatives. lol There actually isn't any evidence that they are "more reliable" than previous generations. No one here has claimed that the new trucks are less reliable, only discussions about general qa/qc. Any claim that your 2 year old truck with 20k miles is somehow more reliable than a 20+ year old truck with 350k miles is completely made up.

They certainly aren't any more capable than before, either. Unless you're talking about the $20k in "upgrades" you get form a TRD Pro, but I don't think plastic bumpers, a cool looking grill, crawl control, C rated all season tires, and some decent shocks, then charging you $15-20k more for it actually makes it more capable off road. Some of those buttons might make it easier for novices to drive off road in some conditions, but the truck itself is no more "capable" than anything with a rear locker.

I'm not sure why you bring up cars broken down on the side of the road with one headlights and oil dripping everywhere. That's never been a "thing" for Toyota, anyway. Still isn't.

"Better" is in the eye of the beholder. The new trucks do look bad ass though, which, if we're being honest, is what Toyota is going for. Toyota has gone the way of most other manufacturers; more form, not as much emphasis on function.

I love my '17 4Runner. It's nicer, quieter, gets better MPGs (marginally) but it's also bigger (not a plus to me) and has more plastic crap which looks cool but doesn't add any function. I haven't had it long enough to determine how "reliable" it is - it only has 30k miles on it.

I'm guessing the waterpump froze because it overheated and blew the headgasket pretty bad. I cant say HOW bad it was because I towed it to toyota and traded it in. All service was done on schedule and by the dealership.

I dont know about your standards but 160k is pretty shitty, much less something I'd consider "proven" to be "very reliable."

I look forward to Jeeps entry into this segment. I can only hope that Toyota comes out with a better drivetrain for the Tacoma. I welcome a larger(more powerful) engine and/or even a hybrid drivetrain. In the meantime, I'll hang onto my 4.0 3rd gen.

Need more context before we jump to conclusions on your Highlander engine.

2007 Hybrids had a timing belt if my research is correct. Common to replace the water pump with the timing belt (every 60k miles).

Was your Highlander on the original water pump?

Nice ranger man. That one still has the old school pushrod 4.0 v6, great engine, just shitty on gas.

I still miss mine, it was rock solid. I sold it because i needed more interior room. Wish i could have kept it.

100% agree with you man. Bought it slightly used, had it for 7 years and she never let me down.

I actually was very excited when i found out the new Ranger was coming out. Then i saw some pics and wasnt impressed at all. Biggest thing was only 1 engine choice with a turbo and no MT option.
