My registration was $648 last year, and that was living in a County that does not smog.

Yeah the DMV will fuck you in the heinie hole if they can piece together that you're registering out of state. Your truck is subject to impound too under VC 4000(a)(1) and VC 22651(o) / (j).

Do you have a California DL or did you file a state tax return last year as a resident? Or one of the 600 other ways they can figure it out.

I have no personal issue with it, mind you, but a lot of people do - the attitude being "I got to pay my Calif registration, why doesn't this guy?". They'll snitch you out...

Edit, I pulled the above shit from memory but when I just re-read VC 4000 it clearly states that "possession of a Calif DL is enough to establish residency in the state" for purposes of requiring you to register your car here.

 

Someone living on my street has their tacoma registered in Florida. They've been here almost a year now I think.

It does kind of piss me off but mostly out of jealousy lol.
