Headlight replacement

This is common. It's from the DRLs never turning off since there is no option to kill them. The solution is to repair the burnt items including the turn signal bulb adapter housings and then replace the turn signals with LED units, as they run MUCH cooler and have much less amperage draw compared to their filament counterparts.

 

Isn't there a switchback LED bulb that fits? DRL white to amber turn signal. Maybe it requires a new relay?

 

Replaced mine earlier this year and ended going with OEM, although they're definitely not cheap! I considered going aftermarket, but just seemed to read so many mixed reviews that I wasn't really willing to roll the dice with headlights.

Now my fog lights on the other hand I just recently replaced with aftermarket. OEM price for those is silly expensive, so figured I'd first take a gamble on the aftermarket ones and if they start having issues early on I'll send them back under warranty.

 

I managed to get mine replaced last year for free after I found out I got another set of faulty headlights during the recall. They're still in perfect condition a year and a half later.

 

I am not sure what I am looking at? The color is too dark? No idea. The turn signal still works.

 

That orangy blackish bubbly look is melted plastic.

I personally didn't require a new replacement relay, and I didn't use a switchback style LED because I wanted to stay the legal Amber color at all times. I picked my bulbs up from Amazon at the time. They are just as bright as the OEs were and have been good to me. It has been a few years since I have installed them and they still remain in service to this day. Being that you have a 2010, Hyperflash may occur, beifn that your flashed relay is different than 2012 and up.

Yes the TSB free replacement is expired. I just documented the Toyota TSB announcement for informational purposes. The outer lens statement is merely saying if the headlight lens has issues like hazing or cracking from UV sun exposure, it is not covered under the TSB. The TSB only applies to the inner DRL lens. When replacing your lights with the newer fixed TSB version which I provided the part numbers for, the entire thing is a non-issue.

 

This is funny. I bought crappy cheap headlight cause they looked cool but sucked so then I bought some more crappy cheap headlights, they sucked too so I bought some oem. Hmmm, sometime cheap is cheap for a reason.

The white DRLs also happen to be your headlights if I remember correctly. Your turn signals (which are the DRLs on Tacoma trucks) are factory Amber yellow. That's an apples to oranges comparison.

 

Im in the same boat and been looking at the TacomaBeast models. But dont need anything fancy so I push back. Eventually will prob go OEM.

DRLs must be white or amber. Forward facing turn signals must be amber. On the 2nd Gen Tacoma the front turn signal and DRL use the same light source, meaning legally it cannot be white, unless you converted them to use a color changing light source that can perform a white DRL and amber signals.

I see people running white DRLs here or white turn signals, but for sake of not getting a fix it ticket and getting hassled by the cops or giving them ammunition to pull me over I retain the legal amber on my DRLs/ turn signals.

Switchbacks are cool and technically you should be able to do that, but I enjoy the amber anyways. What can I say.

In theory yes. Though just because you see it on a new vehicle doesn't necessarily make it legal to ad as a drop in replacement to an older one as replacement LED headlight bulbs are not legal.

Personally I like the amber better. Seems like everything has white DRLs now, even mini vans. Amber is far less common, and I think it looks more aggressive, plus there is no hassle. But that is just personal preference.

 

I like to stay OEM because of quality, but how would I upgrade for brighter whiter low beams or upgrade lights while staying OEM? Any suggestions?
