Lesson learned. Here's the answer I got from the guy who painted my bike a while back.

"Yeah, Mineral Spirits is one of the main ingredients in Enamel Reducer. Essentially, you re-melted the surface of the Enamel Clearcoat and it dried with the cuts from whatever you used to wipe it with (paper towel, lint free cloth, etc)."

Going to have a go at it again this weekend (with dish soap this time).

That is an awesome job! I am a new toyota owner and this is one of the first project I will be doing to my truck. I wonder what the exp. will look like on the tail lights of a 2000 Toyota Tocoma Pre-run?

Hey man thanks and welcome to Tacoma World. I haven't seen this method done on first gen lights yet but I'm sure they would come out looking good.

Thanks for the info and for the welcome to TacomaWorld, I think I will try on some old tail lights...let me screw them up first before I get into my BABY! I went under the 1st gen truck section, and a few guys had done their truck lights and they came out looking sharp. I guess I need to just step up to the plate and do it and not fear the I will screw things up.

The great thing about it is if you mess it up, it can be redone or taken back to stock if you so desire! Not really any overlying commitment besides time and the cost of supplies.

how exactly did you do that? just threw on some painters tape over the reverse light and avoided touching them the whole time?

ah that makes more sense. in the write up it said to sand after every coat, did you just sand it once at the beginning?
