RC60F Transmission swap including 4th Gen Taco

I wonder if the reverse is possible. Put the RC62F into a 1st Gen Tundra 4.0 V6 (1GR-FE) instead of the RA60.

 

Good question. I sold off my spare RA60 many years ago... so I can't compare.

Much better than simply changing the axle ratio, hope it works out! This had me curious what my 6spd Frontier has for gearing as it works pretty good with the stock tire size (265/75R16).

Watching— I did an h41 swap in my fj40 and it made the rig so much better. 4.9 1st gear is a game changer.

The Tacoma would be so much better with a lower first/revers.

 

The RC60F should be here by week's end.

Unpacked, inspected, OK'd. The shift extension is interesting, it moves the pivot point rearward 4.5", and up about 2". I won't be using it as it won't allow room for the manual transfer case shifter.

The bellhousing is a bit shorter on the RC60F, 188 mm vs 208 mm on the RC62F. Hopefully the input shaft is the same length. If there's enough time this week, I'll consider dropping the transmission from the Taco and comparing.

No updates ATM... too many irons in the Tacoma fire. The truck is torn down fairly deep, I'll be rolling on it again soon.

 

Will be interested to see how things play out. For what it's worth, Toyota generally keeps things the same as far as input shafts go between transmissions and engines. The input shaft on the Tacoma is different than the Hilux but that is primarily due to the gear ratio change. There are very few part numbers different between the RC60 and RC62; I had been looking into gear swapping options previously.

Honestly I expect you'll need to swap the bellhousing and the shifter and that'll be that.

All of the research I did was with the RC61F vs the RC62F. The RC61F is used behind the 2.8l diesel available in the Hilux. The RC60F I believe is used with the 2.4l diesel hilux. This is possibly where you are getting the difference in the bellhousing length differences as well as it having a shift extension housing.

The transfer case I have been looking at is the FJ auto transmission case with a manual transmission input shaft swapped into it.

I have not gotten the ball rolling on my swap other than researching which parts will fit where. If these transmissions follow the transmissions that Toyotas have been equipped with then even if the case is not compatible the internal parts will interchange.

Case in point on the old school R series transmissions you could take parts from the R452 remote shift, R150, R151 and some Marlin Crawler shift forks build a hell of a good transmission.

@Jeff Lange can you do some looking into the part numbers on the RC60F, RC61F and the RC62F to see if I am correct on the engine and transmission configurations being correct on the 2.4l vs 2.8l vs 3.5l.

My input shaft dealings come from Diesel/gas Land Cruisers, where there are several different input shafts. Different engines had different length input shafts.... and bellhousings.

Everything I can find points to all Hilux and Fortuner equipped with 1KD, 1GD, and 2GD utilizing the same 31111-0K150 bell housing. The RC60F is utilized with the 2.4 2GD.

The diesel power train gear ratios are definitely better than the ones that we got stuck with. Toyota is also great at doing things totally different from market to market.this can cause some confusion. I hope the Transmission you got has the correct tail housing and is not set up for a land cruiser case. Next time I am in the PI I am going to do my best to source a lightly used RC61F from a wrecked Hilux to bring back in my check luggage for my own use.

If I am not mistaken the RC61F was also used in the FJ Cruiser too.
