4.88 is WAY better off-road though, for what it's worth.

Sounds like the trade off for how driving isn't worth it.

Axle gears are pretty insignificant once you add a crawlbox. Just 4.7 gears are an 80% gear reduction over stock compared to a 7% difference in 4.56 vs 4.88. Put it in double low and then it really doesn’t matter. :)

Not entirely sure how I feel about this mod, considering exactly zero of the ring terminals fit and I had to drill them out.
Also the boot didn't work at all so I had to hack it up too. Lots of hacking going on here.

Just do the 4.88s, it's nice to be able to accelerate in the gear and the gas milage difference will be negligible.

@turbodb any idea why this got all fucky? I just took this out to swap to 32 tooth, needless to say it wasn't happy and also appear to have taken some pieces of something else with it. Feels like plastic pieces. Speedo still worked during that time.
Perhaps swapping the speedo gear without also swapping whatever it runs up against is not a smart idea?

Hmm, never seen that before - how long has it been in there?

Looks to me like the plastic has been "worn down" over time on the far end (the end furthest inside the t-case). Maybe that's just from gunk in your t-case getting sucked up between the intermeshing gears over the years and wearing down the plastic? :notsure:

In any case, what I would likely do - since you said it was still working correctly - is put in the new gear and change the oil in the t-case. Then, in a year, take the 32-tooth one out again and see if it too shows weird wear. If it does, then something weird is going on and you get to decide whether to address or ignore it. If not, then you chalk it up to...:tinfoilhat:.

that's the 33 tooth gear you're looking at, has less than a tank of gas through it.. it was not very easy to put in and required more tapping it in than I cared to admit. The 30 tooth gear that I removed with 190k miles on it still looked perfect. That being said, the 32 tooth gear that I just put in went in MUCH easier, so I am hoping all is well with it. We will see!

    Oooof, one tank.

Sounds to me like it was either mis-aligned or not the right gear (part #). My 33-tooth went in like it sounds like your 32-tooth did - easy. Hope the 32 works out for ya! Keep us posted.

cam bolts for my alignment finally seized up, looks like a bushing replacement is due soon.

Putting this here for future reference:

@turbodb Also it looks like the 32 tooth speedo gear is almost perfect, it reads maybe .7mph faster on my speedo around 70 mph, what's really funny is my odometer is still about 3% slow compared to my GPS speed/mileage app.

Pretty sure DOT regulations say a speedometer has to be within +/- 5% of actual. My 4runner read fast on stock tires.

yeah, they will get in trouble if the speedo reads slow compared to actual. My motorcycle (as are many others) are horrendously inaccurate and reads 10% faster than actual. I have just been messing with different tooth gears after larger tires and regearing. Just funny that the odometer doesn't line up with it.

And yeah I figured out that tying the tree saver that way wasn't the most efficient way to rip a tree out of the ground haha

Oddly enough the DOT or FMCSA doesn't specify a percent range for speedometers. They just have to be within 5mph at 50mph. Obviously works out to 10% but still interesting verbiage to the rule. Also why you can pretty much always get a 1-5 over ticket thrown out immediately and why they don't count on your license.

I knew there was some leeway, but couldn't remember the specifics. Thanks!
