Yeah that’s what I’m reading, with a stock alternator you’ll need one of the voltage boosters to “trick” the alternator into a higher .05V output or you’ll see reduced life or performance.

Its about voltage. A lot of deep cycles won't be fully charged unless they have a higher voltage. Several ways to improve this.

Think it's an important mod to do? I just installed my NorthStar AGM last week.

I mean Id upgrade the alternator before I upgraded the battery..that's just me.

Fair. I swapped my battery because it was starting to off gas and form corrosion around the electrolyte caps. Got tired of cleaning it.

Yeah, I bought the winch then installing it realized I didn’t have enough CCAs in the battery. I bought the battery then realized I don’t have the voltage to properly charge it. I might as well get the higher voltage alternator rather than forcing voltage out of the stock one. Going down the proverbial rabbit hole here.

I'm on my factory alternator, with an AGM battery, and have been winching hard for years. :tinfoilhat:

Would it be better to have higher output/higher voltage/whatever - maybe, but you don't need it.

1st gens aren't as bad as 2nd and 3rd gens for charging voltage. I'm constantly sitting at 14.4-14.8 with a stock alt.

Think I’m gonna throw it all in and keep an eye on the ScanGauge for a week. If I’m low I’ll get the alternator. Hopefully I’m seeing numbers like yours @Speedytech7. I seem to remember mine hovering around 14.1 when I had it on.

My agm battery has been going strong since 2012 with no signs of problems and no booster

Training someone that doesn’t care did it. I had to redo 4 hours and 60 miles. I peeled out all day. I’m over it now. Time to rotate the tires.

The voltmeter I added to the aux fuse box is typically reading 14.23 - 14.25 @ idle. Going to keep an eye on it but so far I'm happy with the Northstar 24F and my stock alternator.

What I might do is refresh the aging cables for the alternator. Might as well with all the electrical I've been doing. Have already replaced that pissy little ground wire coming off the battery to the chassis.

Upping the gauge of the wire to the battery (big 3) will do wonders for voltage stability

I run 2ga to everything, alt to batt, engine ground to batt, batt to fender ground, firewall ground to engine ground... And an extra frame to engine. Oh and an 8ga to the stock fuse box and delete all the stock fusebox wiring that's inline with the alt and batt because it's moronic

Nothing wrong with the stock alt really. But the likelyhood of the deep cycle being 100% is not very likely.
