Oh haha, that's new compared to the gold standard of mills which haven't changed much since the 60s. That's a little tabletop unit, almost looks like a drill press with an xy table. But no power feed and it doesn't look like it has a collet holder. Still a nice little hobbyist unit

 

Yeah what we havnet isnt big or fancy. Just older stuff my grand father brought with him when he left the academy

We have 90% Bridgeports at work and a couple Bridgeport clones.... I'm searching for the real McCoy or at least a clone since they use the same replacement parts.



I use a Birmingham knockoff most of the time at work, controls are the exact same.

 

Looks like an older Jet JMD-18 round column. They call these types of bench top mills mill/drills. Spindle taper should be either R8 or Morse taper. Collets are available for both types of tapers. RF-31s are another similar mill/drill & still popular today

Good capable machine for the home shop hobbyist or if you don't have the room for a full size knee mill. Disadvantage of the round column is that you loose position when moving the Z axis & will have to reindicate. But once you get used to them you can plan your operations to avoid moving the the head up & down.

 

Nice a real South Bend, good shit. Good size too for a home, much more mobile than most.

Found a guy & stocked up, got me 25 gals of denatured alcohol.

 

I'm sure its older than both of us haha. Machine tools don't age out very fast, most of the stuff we use at work are over 50 years old and still turn true as the day they were new. My school had south bend lathes from the 50s and they were great.
