That's why I never change my oil unless something breaks.

 

I got 5k miles at my 1 year service on my Tundra, so they actually changed the oil at 5k miles.
True story.

 

Wow what a process. I don’t disagree with you but to be perfectly honest they put each engine on the dyno before it hits your chasis. They give them hell before you get them brand new. So babying the motor while buys peace of mind probably dose nothing. I’ve always been a firm believer in 5000 miles oil change and oem Toyota oil filter. And red line it every now and then keep carbon from building up. No doubt everyone has a method. But this method got my stepdads 2nd gen to 400,000 last week

 

I don't know about that, so you are saying Toyota uses a mineral oil to break in our engines, then changes the oil to the 0W20 and lets the truck go then?

 

I don't think that's accurate, can you provide some type of proof the engines are put on a dyno before they are installed in the vehicle. That's news to me.

 

I don’t know what Toyota does before we take delivery. What I’m saying is that IF there was a required break in period...for US to perform...we’d be using mineral oil during that time.

 

I see what you are saying and mineral oil can be used for breaking in an engine, but other oils are used as well. You can't really say that mineral oil would be used because we don't know that. Every engine does go through some type of break in and if we used your thinking that would mean all engines would be run with mineral oil first. That's just not the case. Generally new engines use low tension piston rings and there is very little break in required these days, but there is still metal particles shaved off the rough spots in the engine during this period. Its not like the old days I know.

These threads get so far out of hand its not even funny. If someone wants to change their oil at 5K so be it, just don't go longer than 10K. Changing it at 5K can't hurt any, just means the oil will be cleaner so no harm done.

It's more like $30 (way more if you pay someone to do it) every 2-3 months for me (to get to 5k miles). Plus the time to do it (whether you do it yourself of not). Not saying it's all that bad. But still, I'd prefer to never have to change my oil. (I used a lot of parentheses in this comment).

 

I used Royal Purple and an aftermarket filter.
