Right, but now you’re talking about common sense. It can be done in steps. Just drain into a measuring cup and leave a save margin against what you pump back into the fill plug.

Taking it to a shop right now that a highway patrol friend of mine recommended. Going to see what he says, I’d be ecstatic if it’s just a fluid flush that’s needed

I wish you luck brah, but tbh, that rarely if ever solves anything. If something is broken it needs R&R and if there’s enough debris to cause operational issues, it’s because something’s falling apart or broken and will need replacement

    Best of luck

Here's to hoping it's one of the torque converter shift solenoids.

Folks, I understand that this is a tough crowd here but I was very, very mistaken with my re-ply. When I saw converter, I thought that you guys were talking about the catalytic converter when you guys were actually talking about torque converter. I have not had to deal with a torque converter in any of my Tacoma's in 15 years. Everything I buy now is automatic transmission.

    Again, I really do apologize.

Listen, life is too short and you do, have to laugh yourself (D'oh). It's even ok with calling yourself a dumb ass every once in a while.

    So, (jowybyo), it's ok.

I heard the pump isn't made to suck that much fluid from that far away and will starve the pump. I've already done one drain and fill. That's the path I'll take.

Yep, ‘only’ dropping the pan to drain the trans will still leave a few dirty quarts of oil in the torque converter, cooler and lines. A flush with a proper machine will replace almost all of the old fluid....
IMO, flushing with a machine (and replacing the cheap spring-clamps) then dropping the pan to clean it and replace the filter afterwards is the best way to do it.....

Just got a call from my local toyota dealership with an update.

Toyota corporate has agreed to put an entirely new transmission in my tacoma free of charge. They’re covering the entire $8,000 cost. I am FLOORED right now

Never Never Modify! Keep it aggravation free!
When I had my 09 it would shudder between 30-40 mph uphill only. Dealer diagnosed and it was the torque converter. Got it repaired and it was fine until the head gasket started to leak. They wanted 4,500 for the head gasket repair. The 09 was such a POS that I traded it in at another dealership that didn't know about the head gasket leaking. Sometimes you just have to get rid of them.
