According to Cooper's website, 245/70-16 is the only size where the XL version is made in 16 inch wheels. My thoughts are the XL version would provide a little more sidewall protection on rocky Forest Service roads here in CO. I've been in AK a couple of times and there are some rough roads in your neck of the woods. You mentioned of switching over to the LTs, are you concerned about the 4S not holding up?

Im worried about treadwear more than protection. I load my truck at max payload often, several times a month, and will be towing next year. I’m already at half tread on my 4S’s, and I think the LTs will last longer if only because they have more tread. My concern with them is their winter traction; if it’s comparable to the 4S I’ll switch, if not I won’t.

I rarely get anywhere near max payload, maybe when I fill it with firewood but that's for only a short distance and only in the fall. Most of my towing is with a 4x8 ft flatbed with a raft on it. I figure that if I go to the LT then I'll lose the Snowflake.

Punting on winter use, found these Firestone winterforces studded almost new on Facebook marketplace for $300!

Live on a farm but drive 100 miles a day to work and back. I went with the LTs with the 6 ply on my 11 for puncture resistence and are swapping them out for the 4S to see if they ride better. Tried to adjust the pressures up and fown but never found the seeet spot on these. They are much stiffer and noiser than the 10 ply Firestone's that I replaced at 75k. Cooper seems to think that the truck is to light even though i have a shell on it and usually assorted tools and stuff in the back.

Note that this is from 2014 and about the older AT3, not the AT3 4S.

Getting my 4S tires installed today!

I didn’t even notice that. Still a great review though.

Agreed! Loved it -- and all signs point to the 4S being great tires. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow.

    265/75r16 on stock rims.

I would say that I think they are going to suit my purposes nicely. I used to have the Cooper Discoverer ATP tire in 265/70r16, and they seemed more like other AT tires such as the BFG K0. The AT3 4S are grippy and look nice, but definitely not badass. I'm good with that, but I'd imagine some folks considering the 4s would prefer a more aggressive look.

Hope this helps... I haven't driven much yet, but will update here once I have a few more miles on them (especially with winter weather approaching).

Thanks for the review OP. Helped in my decision making process. Was debating between the AT3 4S, pirelli scorpion AT plus, Grabber AT2 and Michelin XLT.

I am 80%+ on pavement, then mostly dirt/gravel fire roads up in local mountains like 20 times a year and in both sand dunes and sierra mountain snow/ice a couple times a year. So, these seemed like the best overall tire for quiet ride, longevity, well rounded capability and aesthetics. Picked up the stock 265/70/16....and then only learned afterwards I could have tried 75's to get a higher ride. Kinda kicking myself on that, but I'm riding the factory specs which imo is a good thing. And the 265's are wider so thats better for offroading conditions. Also read elsewhere that you loose low end torque when riding bigger tires on stock suspension, so stock tires again better in that respect (this is what I'm telling myself anyway).

Purchased from Americas Tire for $797 installed without certs, minus 10% black friday rebate.

Over 40k on these tires now. Still 10/32nds all around - they are barely wearing at all these last 20k and still very grippy. Their tread warranty may not be complete BS as I've found with many tires but they remain grippy, tight to corner. Nearly 18 months later and I believe this is one of the best value purchases I've ever made for a vehicle considering I'll easily get 2-2.5 years out of a <$700 installed set of tires!
