    Kind of interesting really.

Toyota and Ford may take radically different paths in their next gen trucks, especially if Toyota goes hybrid V6 in gen 4.

I said it in a different post somewhere the difference between ford and Toyota is Ford targets the people who NEED to buy the newest phone every single year, have the newest trends. Toyota targets people who want to have there products for the long term. Ford is smart because technically you make more money when people are always buying new. But the name Toyota has earned with the build to last keeps people coming back. Both make good vehicles Toyota just seems to try and perfect the classics rather than dumping and recreating.

Just saying that the Ranger has had a smooth start besides sales numbers. Hopefully the reliability trend continues. It helps that the bones of the truck were designed by Aussie engineers.

I believe the current Ranger had a smoother debut than the early 3rd gen Tacos with early diff leaks and CPS issues, but that hasn't deterred Taco sales numbers. People love Toyotas.

Exactly the 2.7 V6 is in the F150, only the 2.3 inline 4 is available in the Ranger.

2.7LEB is a kickass power plant. I love the one in my work truck. I find it spoils up faster and has more butt-Dyno than the 3.5L EBs we also have at work. It would be absolutely insane in a lighter vehicle.

    A few.
That 2.7 eco actually has the same torque output as Fords 5.0 coyote V8. And it produces it at a lower rpm.

Yep, those turbo diesels sure aren’t reliable haulers of stuff...

Exactly. Do people even realize that diesel locomotives, ocean-going freighters, dump trucks, back-hoes, long-haul rigs, and every single diesel powered generator on a ship, or running a logging camp, are all turbo-charged? The highest mileage/hours IC engines in the world are all turbos. People forget this.

Why do people keep bringing up turbo diesels when talking about petrol turbo reliability. Youre trying to compare apples to bananas. Diesel engines by nature are designed much more robustly for the compression detonation and higher PE of diesel. They also dont have to deal with an ignition system timing. Even with that all said, a NA diesel will be more reliable than a turbo one.

Whether you like them or not, competition from the Ranger/Canyonero/whatever in this market segment will lead to better trucks and better prices for all of us in the future.

I test drove several '18 Tacomas before deciding to buy a used 2nd gen last year. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing 3rd gens, I'm mostly just too poor to afford a new truck! But aside from safety features, I'm hard pressed to find any breathtaking must-have innovation over the past 14 model years of Tacomas -- at least for a tinkerer like me who is going to change out the radio/nav no matter what.

Sidenote: Let's be honest, who shells out new-truck money just for safety features? Sure as hell not me, and you can quote that on my roadside memorial.

So, I am always happy to see a new truck model hitting the showroom floors, or even better on the trails. I hope they at least make a big enough dent in the market to breathe new inspiration into the Tacomas.

Who knows, maybe someday soon, dropping $40k at a Toyota dealership will get you a midsize truck with a proper engine and disc brakes.

Kinda ironic.. all this ranger bashing but yet y’all can’t stop talking about them. Pos or not, you guys keeping this thread active. We keep getting more and more former Tacoma owners making the switch.

Personally still hoping the ford lights a fuse under Toyota to up their game. Still waiting on that midsize turbo diesel/ v6

I’m still very active on this forums and constantly see current gen complaining about this and that. Yet those who’ve never driven a ranger automatically dismis them. Yet those that have driven a ranger have mostly nothing good to say about them
