I have before but it's always kind of bothered me. I thought the main reason for tipping is for the service you received while dining, or having drinks. So why tip for just getting my food and ringing me up?

I was thinking about this last night when picking up food at a mexican restaurant. There was a tip jar there and the area I was in was for picking up take-out only, so not a bar or anything.

Not for take out no, not usually at least. If they're cool and making small talk with me while I wait then I'll float them a couple bucks if they got a tip jar sitting on the counter.

I didn't tip before but then I became a waitress and I definitely tip now, not a lot...but at least a something. Someone has to put the order in, make sure it's all made right, give you the right shit to go with your meal....Doesn't sound like anything but it does take time

Especially if its a larger to go order, I won't have time to take new tables if i want to get the order ready as fast as possible, and there goes money I could have made.

i don't tip for pick up, and i consider myself a very good tipper for waiters, bellboys, valets etc. I used to wait tables and valet cars through college so i always tip well but not for pick up

    Hell to the no.

They serve a ton of people in a shift unlike a waiter/waitress who is taking care of a few tables at a time during their meal

Why would you tip? It's not like they're doing anything other than ringing you up and taking your money for the food. It's like saying you should tip the cashier at the grocery store for scanning your groceries... or tip the person ringing up your new jeans at your local department store.

Tips should be earned... not given because they're expected.

Now if the "take out" you're referring to is someone delivering a pizza to our house, then yes, I tip. I'll tip even more if it's shitty weather. I've even tipped more when I saw the shitty, smoking car they delivered my pizza in... in the hopes they would save up and get it serviced. :D

Agreed...I always tip for delivery. I'm just seeing more and more tip jars in the pick-up areas of restaurants and it annoys me.

I do agree with a previous post that if I am putting in a huge order for work or something and it was a pain in the ass to put it all together, I would tip (plus its my company's money, not mine) but not just for picking dinner for 4.

You must not have kids yet. Now that I have a 8, 5, and 1 year old, take-out is the way to go most of the time.

If I was a pizza delivery dude I wouldn't be using my best car for that work either. That said, I have had a guy deliver me a pizza in porsche before...I was just like

Sorry, but isn't that simply part of your job? To me good customer service means doing more than the basic requirements of your job.

My wife was a waitress when I met her and I learned to tip very well when dining in, or if it is something being delivered to the house. If I am picking it up myself I am not going to tip them, I am using my gas and time to get it and they are not having to pay the wage of someone to deliver it to me.

To answer OP question, when I pay with cash, I leave a like $2 dollars and what change I get back.

But when I go out to eat, I usually leave 10%. But when I do go out to eat, is there a tip for the chef/cook? The reason why I go out to eat is to have a great meal. The waiter/waitress does not make the meal, they just take my order and refill my drinks. But I am a good tipper when it comes to great service.

Funny though that people will not tip the waiter/waitress if they are upset with the quality of the food.
